Five Houma- and Thibodaux-area athletes represented their schools at the LHSAA state gymnastics meet earlier this month.

Each athlete in gymnastics can compete in up to four events: the vault, the uneven parallel bars, the balance beam, and the floor exercise. Each event is scored by the judges out of 10 possible points, and whoever scores the most points is the champion for that event. There's also an all-around championship for anyone who competes in all four events, scored out of 40 points. However, there's no such thing as overtime or extra innings in gymnastics, so in the event of a tie in any event or the all-around, everyone who tied is named a champion.

Here's how each of them fared:

    Anabelle Blanchard, Assumption

One of three Lady Mustangs competing, Blanchard scored a 7.65 on the vault, a 6.9 on the bars, an 8.575 on the beam, and a 7.35 on the floor for a 30.475 all-around on her way to finishing 35th in the state.

    Kelci Blanchard, Assumption

Blanchard didn't have many high scores, but her consistency put her in the top 15 in the state's all-around. She scored 8.55 on the vault, 7.625 on the bars, 8.375 on the beam, and 8.05 on the floor to give her an all-around score of 32.6.

    Kadynce Garza, South Terrebonne

Garza had, according to the judges, the best state title meet of every Houma- and Thibodaux-area competitor. She scored a 9.45 on the vault and the bars. She had an 8.95 on the floor, but her 9.8 on the beam was good enough for third in the state. Her 37.65 in the all-around was also enough to place in the top 10.

    Charlotte Gotschalk, Vandebilt Catholic

Gottschalk had a consistent performance, with a 9.05 on the vault, 9.425 on the bars, and 9.375 on the beam. Her best performance was on the floor, though, where her 9.375 tied her for fifth in the state. Her 37.225 in the all-around tied her for 16th overall.

    Audrey Naquin, Assumption

Naquin was nearly right there with Garza. She scored a 9.125 on the vault, 9.475 on the beam, and 9.0 on the floor, but saved her best performance for the bars. Her 9.875 bars score was enough to clinch an individual state championship. She finished 12th with a 37.325 in the all-around.
