Who's going to Sulphur? LHSAA quarterfinal updates for Houma- and Thibodaux-area baseball

The Houma- and Thibodaux-area had three high school baseball teams make it to the LHSAA baseball quarterfinals, and at least one was guaranteed to make it to Sulphur as two of them played each other. Two of those three teams made it to state, with one eliminated.

Here's how the Houma- and Thibodaux-area fared in this week's playoff baseball:

    Covenant Christian

Second-seeded CCA clinched its spot in the Division IV select state semifinals with a 9-5 win over No. 7 Sacred Heart for the school's second trip to state in three years. Should the Lions pull off another win in Sulphur, they will make the first state championship game in program history.

    E.D. White

The 6-seed Cardinals opened their Division II select series with No. 3 Vandebilt Catholic with a 6-2 win over the rival Terriers, but EDW couldn't keep up its Game 1 performance for the rest of the series. The bats fell quiet, scoring only five runs in Games 2 and 3 combined, while the pitching bottomed out, allowing 11 combined runs in the remaining games.

    Vandebilt Catholic

Third-seeded VCHS dropped the first game to rival E.D. White, but the Terriers bounced back with a Game 2 win, 5-2, and a win in Game 3, 6-3, to clinch a spot in the state semifinals for the fourth straight year. If Vandebilt Catholic wins in the semis, the Terriers will return to the title game for the third straight year.

    This week's schedule

Covenant Christian gets the baseball week started, as the Lions take on the 11th-seeded Glenbrook Apaches at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Glenbrook got to Sulphur with back-to-back upsets of No. 6 St. John and No. 3 Ouachita Christian. With a win, CCA will play either Opelousas Catholic or Central Catholic on Friday afternoon for the state title.

Vandebilt Catholic is set to face 2-seed Teurlings Catholic in the semifinal game on Thursday morning. Once teams get to Sulphur, the semifinals and the championships are decided by one game rather than three games for every division. Should the Terriers win, they will play the winner of No. 1 St. Louis Catholic and No. 5 St. Thomas More in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.
