Three of the big motors that made the Waterloo girls basketball program go in 2023-24 have been recognized for their efforts. Seniors Brenna Huebner, Tess Blundell, and Bri Lauersdorf helped the Pirates reach some impressive milestones in their final season. Waterloo notched the first season sweep of rival Marshall since the 2006-07 season and knocked off the No. 2 seed in their bracket in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament.

In addition to those two Marshall wins, Waterloo won two more games in Capitol — South conference play to finish 4-6. This landed the Pirates in fourth place in the final standings. The other coaches in the conference took notice of the seniors’ hard work. Huebner picked up second team all-conference honors following the season while Blundell and Lauersdorf were named honorable mention.

Huebner entered her final season as the most decorated player on the roster. She picked up second team all-conference honors as a junior and was also named honorable mention as a sophomore. Her performance in 2023-24 mirrored her storied history of success in the conference.

Huebner was Waterloo’s most reliable source for a bucket, leading the team with an average of 13.2 points per game. She also pulled down six rebounds, dished two assists, and nabbed 2.8 steals per game to prove the multifaceted nature of her game. She had by far the most steals on the team this season, nabbing 68. Her best performance in conference play came in the Pirates’ second meeting with rival Marshall, 20 points.

Right behind Huebner on the scoring list was Blundell. She proved to be a potent option for the Pirates, as well, finishing with 10.6 points per game. Blundell also ripped down 5.1 boards, passed 1.4 assists, picked off 1.4 steals, and rejected a team-high 1.4 blocks per game.

This is the first all-conference nod of Blundell’s career, a fitting sendoff after a hefty career of varsity basketball. She, too, had her best Capitol — South performance in the team’s second meeting with Marshall. She lit the Cardinals up for 18 points thanks to a trio of made three pointers.

Speaking of shots from deep, that was Lauersdorf’s special this season. She rewrote the record books in Waterloo girls basketball history with her success from the three point line. She nailed an incredible 41 this season, outpacing the previous mark of 37 set by Julia Asik the season prior.

Lauersdorf was also a valuable passer as the team’s point guard, leading the way with 2.2 assists per game. Elsewhere, she also averaged seven points, three rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

This is the first all-conference recognition of her career. She hit four three point shots twice this season against non-conference opponents Deerfield and Markesan. Her season-high in three pointers came in Waterloo’s first meeting with Marshall, where she nailed five to finish with 18 points.

Off the court, Huebner and Lauersdorf continued to pile up postseason recognition. This time, it came from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as members of the 2024 WBCA girls basketball academic all-state team. Nominated players had to be both varsity athletes and maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average.
