Cardinals cross country competes at Westfield Classic

Marshall's cross country program continued its season on Thursday, Sept. 26 by competing in the Westfield High School Classic. The invitational was a bit on the smaller side with only eight teams competing on the boys side and 10 for the girls.

The Cardinal girls raced their way to a team score of 143 to finish in sixth place while the boys put up a team score of 140 for seventh. Aquinas won the boys invite with a team score of 48, tailed closely by Pardeeville with 49. Berlin claimed the top spot for the girls with 44 team points, followed by Aquinas with 49 and Auburndale with 83.

Senior Fernando Campos set the pace for the Marshall boys as his time of 19:42.2 earned him 15th place. Senior teammate Luke Egan wasn't far behind in 19th with a time of 20:18.3. Marshall also got a time of 21:35.0 from junior Anthony Gonzalez for 33rd and freshman Elijah Reichelt put up a time of 21:47.1 for 37th.

The Marshall girls earned a pair of top-20 finishes, too, headlined by senior Emma Hellenbrand in 14th with her time of 23:23.4. Sophomore teammate Tori Justmann was on her heels with a time of 23:42.3 for 16th. Sophomore Kylie Rateike also nabbed 25th with her time of 24:45.3 and junior Madalyn Weyh put up a time of 26:52.6 for 43rd.

Up next, Marshall will head over to Lake Mills to run in the Nightfall Classic 608 at Lake Mills Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 4. 50 teams are invited to participate in the massive event. The Cardinals will follow that by heading to Albany High School for an invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12.
