Marshall girls still seeking first conference win
It’s been tough sledding for the Marshall girls basketball program this winter. With only three Capitol — South conference games remaining on the schedule, the Cardinals sit at 0-7 in conference play. Overall, they’ve lost seven straight as the end of the regular season draws nearer. Perhaps their best chance to get it done came on Monday, Jan. 22 in a home matchup with Wisconsin Heights. Instead, the Vanguards, winless in conference play until that point, erased a double digit deficit to sneak out a...
Marshall wrestling competes at Capitol Conference meet
With the 2023-24 wrestling postseason quickly approaching, the Marshall High School program took advantage of one last opportunity to sharpen up. The Cardinals headed to Lake Mills High School on Saturday, Feb. 3 to participate in the 2024 Capitol Conference meet. They ran into some stiff competition there. Marshall finished in seventh place of the nine participating teams with a total team score of 67. Lodi won the event with a team score of 285, followed by Sugar River in second with 237 and Waterloo...
Trevor Firari claims Capitol Conference championship
Waterloo senior wrestler Trevor Firari is a conference champion once again. He missed much of last season due to injury, including the Capitol Conference meet, robbing him of the chance to defend the title he claimed at 170 lbs. as a sophomore. The 2024 edition of the conference meet, hosted at Lake Mills High School on Saturday, Feb. 3, offered one last shot at redemption. Firari made the most of his opportunity, now wrestling in the 190 lbs. weight class. It only took three wins...
Benny Marshall's 31 points not enough in road Poynette loss
Win or lose, the Waterloo boys basketball team plays an exciting brand of hoops. The Pirates often engage in high-scoring shootouts where there’s no shortage of fireworks. The only problem is, they’ve ended up on the losing side of these entertaining matchups more often than not. Entering this week, the Pirates owned an overall record of 5-12 with a 1-4 mark in conference play. Monday, Feb. 5 seemed like a chance to get one in the win column with a trip to Poynette. While the...
Family donates ancestry book to Waterloo library, historical society
Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Giles presented two volumns of Giles family research done by Louise Giles Maddux, Tom's sister, to Maureen Giese, Waterloo Area Historical Society and also to Karl Junginger Memorial Library. Louise visited the Museum several times to gain historical information on the Franklin, "Let" and other related Giles pioneers of early Waterloo. Louise lives in Nebraska. The Society accepts the thorough detailed research done by Louise and is grateful for the family membership, valued friendship, and most of all the composite of related Giles family in print and pictures for all to read, treasure and honor family roots.

Waterloo boys get first conference win, nearly add another
Much like last season, the Waterloo boys basketball team has taken down Wisconsin Heights to win its first Capitol — South conference game. Last season, the two sides split their season series with Waterloo winning the first game, 55-48. This would be their last win of the year as the Pirates finished things out on a 13-game losing streak. Proof of improvement, and hopefully a better end to the season, may be found in Waterloo’s win over the Vanguards this season. Unlike last season’s 10-point...
Waterloo man arrested in armed road rage incident
A 29-year-old Waterloo man was arrested last week after a report of road rage with a firearm in Madison. According to an incident report on the Madison Police Department’s website, officers responded to a traffic incident at S. Gammon Road at Watts Road at about 12:30 p.m. Jan. 25. When the suspect returned, he admitted to having a gun in his center console, according to the incident report. Police arrested the 29-year-old for carrying a concealed weapon, disorderly conduct while armed, and intentionally pointing a firearm at a person.
Waterloo girls take pair of tough conference losses
The top tier in girls basketball in the Capitol — South conference is beginning to make itself clear. New Glarus and Cambridge have distanced themselves as a pair of powerhouses this season. No team knows this better than Waterloo, which had to play them back-to-back in their two most recent conference games. They lived up to the billing. In a pair of home games, Waterloo lost 82-31 to New Glarus on Saturday, Jan. 20 and 71-33 to Cambridge on Friday, Jan. 26. ...
Marshall wrestling takes on non-conference triangular
As a final tune-up before the impending postseason, the Marshall wrestling team accepted a non-conference triangular invitation. The Cardinals headed off to Living Word Lutheran High School on Thursday, Jan. 25 to face the host Timberwolves as well as Kenosha St. Joseph. It was a strong day for Marshall. The Cardinals scored a 36-24 team win over Kenosha St. Joseph and battled valiantly in an eventual 41-34 loss to host Living Word Lutheran. ...
Trevor Firari takes first at Deerfield Scramble
The Waterloo wrestling program has been waiting for a performance like it had on Saturday, Jan. 27. The Pirates, which have earned a reputation as one of the area’s better programs in recent years, have had hurdles to clear in 2023-24. A string of injuries and recovery from said injuries has stunted a talented group from reaching heights they’ve grown accustomed to. That all changed at the 2024 Deerfield Scramble on Saturday. Waterloo, seemingly back to firing on all cylinders, was one of the best...
Marshall High School Scholarship Foundation hosts Turkey Tailgating
The Marshall Scholarship Foundation Dollars for Scholars hosted their yearly Turkey Tailgate fundraising event Jan. 25 at Marshall High School. The event started in 2014 and is one of many to help raise money for the foundation, which began in 2005 when the Marshall class of 2003 donated funds to start a scholarship foundation. At the time, the school and community worked together to find a model to base their...

Both incumbents will run unopposed as no other candidates filed nomination papers, which were due at 5 p.m. on Jan. 2. GREEN BAY– Dairy farmers work every day to ensure their cows receive the highest quality care. On any given day, they might find themselves holding any number of responsibilities. Fixing a broken manure pump, chopping corn silage and treating a sick cow. There are those select few who not only excel at running their farms but actively engage their local communities. They serve as leaders for multiple organizations and work...
Waterloo wrestling wins home triangular
The Waterloo wrestling program made the most of its final home meet of the 2023-24 regular season. The Pirates invited Living Word Lutheran and Watertown Luther Prep in for a triangular on Tuesday, Jan. 16 to celebrate senior night and beat them both. They won 57-12 over Living Word Lutheran and 49-21 over Luther Prep. The Pirates started hot with that matchup against Living Word Lutheran. They only got two forfeit wins, proving their worth on the mat. Six Waterloo wrestlers earned their victory via...
Cardinals surrender shot at first conference win
The Marshall girls basketball team has gotten off to an uncharacteristically slow start in Capitol — South conference play this season. Last year, the Cardinals finished with a 5-5 record against conference opponents. They’ve already matched that loss total this season in as many games, a tough 0-5 start. The most recent of those conference losses was the most heartbreaking. Something had to give in a home game against Wisconsin Heights on Monday, Jan. 22 as neither team entered the game with a Capitol —...
