Waterloo track & field hosts home conference tri
The fickle Wisconsin springtime weather allowed for plenty of competition last week. While the weather wasn’t exactly sunny and 75 degrees, Waterloo’s track & field program was able to open its season with a home Capitol Conference traingular, inviting Marshall and Cambridge, on Tuesday, April 9. While visiting Marshall had an impressive meet, winning 24 of the varsity events, there were still some positive results for host Waterloo to be proud of, as well. ...
'Ready, Set, Library': Celebrating National Library Week
Libraries across the nation are marking National Library Week with events and discussions to highlight the importance of these special community places. According to the American Library Association, the theme this year is “Ready, Set, Library.” It is meant to highlight that “in our always-online world, libraries give us a green light to something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and focus on what matters most,” the ALA states on its website. ...
Marshall track & field performs well in first week of action
The Marshall track & field program has hit the ground running in 2024, pun intended. The Cardinals have wasted no time as establishing themselves as a threat in the area. They kicked off the season by lighting up a Capitol Conference triangular at Waterloo High School on Tuesday, April 9 before heading to Markesan High School on Thursday, April 11 for an invitational. There, the boys took first place with a team score of 192 while the girls finished runner-up with a score of 127. ...
Pirates keep on winning
The Waterloo baseball program is one of the area’s hottest teams. The Pirates experienced the woes of tight losses and bad injury luck in 2023. With largely the same roster back for this spring, the tides have turned in an impressive way. When we last checked in on Waterloo, the Pirates were off to an inspiring 3-0 record. That number has now more than doubled to 7-0 with a trio of home wins before collecting another on the road. They knocked off Poynette 12-6 on...
Dominant three-game stretch for Waterloo softball
The Waterloo softball team cleared a massive hurdle early in the 2024 season. The Pirates avenged a pair of losses to rival Marshall from the season prior, handing them a 2-1 walk-off loss on Monday, April 8. Following the pride of victory came a humbling defeat. The day following, the Pirates made the trip to face Columbus on Tuesday, April 9 and left with a 12-6 loss. Instead of allowing this non-conference stumble derail progress, Waterloo turned on the jets. The Pirates proceeded to launch...

In Waterloo, grant program aimed at downtown beautification
Time waits for no one and nothing, as we are all aware. It waits for no one and slowly but surely entropy comes along and wears things down, and so it goes. Fortunately, in Waterloo, when it comes to objects and places where entropy can be restored, ambitious and like-minded individuals actively work to keep things looking fresh. The Waterloo Community Development Authority is on the job and doing what...
Marshall baseball picks up much-needed win
The 2024 season didn't start as planned for the Marshall baseball program. The Cardinals took a pair of beatings to open things up, 14-1 to Capitol - South rival New Glarus in the opener and 10-0 against Lakeside Lutheran on Tuesday, April 9. The chance to get back on track came in the form of a trip to Deerfield on Wednesday, April 10. Marshall certainly found its footing offensively. The Cardinals scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to help take home...

Red-hot Pirates win first three baseball games
The Waterloo baseball team entered the 2024 season with something to prove. The Pirates had all the talent they needed last spring, but limped to a 5-17 record thanks to a confluence of injuries, tight losses, and plain old bad luck. Many of those same players from that roster are back this season, and the chip they all wear on their collective shoulders is translating into early success. The Pirates are off to a rousing 3-0 start this season, which includes an early win over...
Waterloo earns revenge against Marshall with walk-off win
Last spring was a dream season for the Waterloo softball program. The Pirates reached the pinnacle of the sport, reaching the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state title game before falling to champion Iola-Scandinavia. The only thing missing was a Capitol — South conference title. That honor belonged to bitter rival Marshall in 2023. The Cardinals went undefeated in conference play on their way to the conference championship, handing Waterloo losses of 10-4 and 6-5 in the process. ...
Future begins to look greener for Marshall's recreational fields
Several of the Village of Marshall’s key recreational/athletic fields are beginning to look healthier as the season for spring and summer sports approaches. The village’s Parks and Recreation Department has been hard at work to revitalize roughly 15 acres of green space after the turf became significantly tarnished in October 2023. According to Parks and Recreation Director Brandon Millner, the village is not certain as to the specific cause of...
