Both incumbents will run unopposed as no other candidates filed nomination papers, which were due at 5 p.m. on Jan. 2. GREEN BAY– Dairy farmers work every day to ensure their cows receive the highest quality care. On any given day, they might find themselves holding any number of responsibilities. Fixing a broken manure pump, chopping corn silage and treating a sick cow. There are those select few who not only excel at running their farms but actively engage their local communities. They serve as leaders for multiple organizations and work...

Cardinals surrender shot at first conference win
The Marshall girls basketball team has gotten off to an uncharacteristically slow start in Capitol — South conference play this season. Last year, the Cardinals finished with a 5-5 record against conference opponents. They’ve already matched that loss total this season in as many games, a tough 0-5 start. The most recent of those conference losses was the most heartbreaking. Something had to give in a home game against Wisconsin Heights on Monday, Jan. 22 as neither team entered the game with a Capitol —...
Strong week for Marshall wrestling as postseason approaches
As the postseason rapidly approaches, the Marshall wrestling program challenged itself with a pair of challenges last week. Days later, they were up north again, this time at Markesan High School for the Bark Memorial Invite. Thursday’s quad action got off to a strong start for Marshall as the Cardinals earned a 54-16 team win over host Lourdes Academy. Three Cardinals earned wins via pin, headlined...

Marshall survives in rivalry matchup with Waterloo
For years, the boys basketball rivalry between Marshall and Waterloo hasn't lived up to the hype. The Pirates of Waterloo entered this season on a 25-game losing streak to the Cardinals of Marshall, dating back to Jan. 6, 2011. However, a strong senior class and positive momentum garnered from second-year Waterloo head coach Jared Brown gave Waterloo a fighting chance in the 2023-24 season. The first edition of the matchup, hosted by the Pirates on Thursday, Jan. 18, did not disappoint. Waterloo came out of...

Marshall, Waterloo compete in Capitol Conference wrestling quad
As conference wrestling season kicked off for the Capitol Conference last week, it was only fitting that rivals Marshall and Waterloo started together. Both the Cardinals and Pirates, as well as Cambridge, made the journey to Belleville High School on Thursday, Jan. 11 for a conference quad against host Sugar River. While Sugar River would claim the quad with a perfect 3-0 record that evening, it was still a strong day of competition for Marshall and Waterloo. The Pirates took down two of their three...

Waterloo boys struggle in conference opener
Building up a program isn't always a linear rise. The Waterloo boys basketball team has definitely been picking up steam in its second year under head coach Jared Brown. The Pirates have already won three games this season, tied with their season totals in both 2021-22 and 2022-23. However, there's still a hefty mountain left to climb. Capitol - South conference rival Belleville served as a reminder of that on Thursday, Jan. 11. The Wildcats paid a visit to the Pirates and demonstrated what Waterloo...
Red-hot Pirates race past Cardinals
Last girls basketball season, the rivalry between Marshall and Waterloo finally saw some parity. The Pirates of Waterloo earned a midseason win over the Cardinals of Marshall, their first in the rivalry since 2007. 31 straight losses. Still, Marshall had the last laugh in 2022-23 as, in a third matchup in the WIAA state tournament, the Cardinals ended the Pirates' season. This time around, Waterloo was out for more than revenge. The Pirates wanted to prove last season's victory was no fluke. They got the...

Marshall, Waterloo wrestling update
As the calendar flips from 2023 to 2024, the wrestling programs at Marshall and Waterloo are starting to take form. Injuries and shuffling of appropriate weight classes hampered production for both squads early on in the campaign. In recent weeks, though, both have shown steps toward improvement. This comes just in time, too, as Capitol Conference season is set to kick off soon. Most recently, Marshall took on the Rocket Scramble at Cedar Grove-Belgium High School on Saturday, Jan. 6. Short a few participants, only...
