The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 on the Sherman Minton Bridge have reopened after a multi-day closure.

Lanes reopened at 5 a.m. Wednesday after a nine-day closure beginning Aug. 5 to install new hanger cables and remove the existing ones. It marks the last phase of the bridge renewal and consists of replacing lighting, installing equipment for traffic monitoring, painting and adding permanent striping, according to the project's website.

The closure was originally scheduled for Aug. 2 but was delayed to avoid construction over two weekends . Eastbound lanes remained open and westbound traffic was directed to Interstate 65 and Interstate 265.

The Sherman Minton Bridge, opened in 1962, carries around 70,000 vehicles daily. The renewal is intended to rehabilitate the bridge and expand its life by 30 years.
