Bellarmine basketball returning to Knights Hall. Here's what to know

After four seasons at Freedom Hall, the Bellarmine men's and women's basketball teams are returning to their home gym in the Highlands.

The university on Wednesday announced the move back to Knights Hall for the 2024-25 campaign and beyond in conjunction with its complete transition to Division I.

"Bringing the Knights back to the Highlands will allow our students to fully experience the atmosphere of Division I basketball without leaving campus, satisfy fans who have missed the venue's rowdy experience, bring added convenience to our student-athletes, and provide additional game-day revenue to neighborhood businesses while offering basketball fans in the surrounding neighborhoods an excellent entertainment option at a comparatively affordable price point," athletics director Scott Wiegandt said in a news release.

Added head men's basketball coach Scott Davenport on X, formerly Twitter: "This is for EVERYBODY, students, alumni, COMMUNITY, students/parents, throughout OUR community, neighbors and the phenomenal local establishments in our neighborhood."

Bellarmine opened Knights Hall (capacity: 2,196) in 1960. It moved to the 18,252-seat Freedom Hall ahead of the 2020-21 season — its first at the DI level.

The high point of the Knights' time at the Fairgrounds was the men's team winning an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship there in 2022; but, due to NCAA guidelines for DI transition, it was kept out of March Madness.

The following renovations are planned for Knights Hall in advance of the move back: a new entertainment space on the stage, a new center-hung scoreboard capable of showing video, a new scorer's table with video capability and new television monitors in the lobby and terrace level.

Bellarmine said it will contact season ticket holders in September with information regarding options for the men's and women's basketball 2024-25 season at Knights Hall.
