With several players out because of injury and illness, Carroll County High School has forfeited its football game against Kentucky Country Day that was scheduled for Friday.

Carroll County also canceled classes Thursday and Friday after student attendance dropped to 88% on Wednesday and staff attendance “dropped to almost 75%,” according to a statement issued by Superintendent Casey Jaynes.

Jaynes said the illnesses range from RSV, rhinovirus, colds, flu, allergies and COVID-19.

“This becomes a safety concern,” Jaynes said in the news release. “As staff become ill, we have to combine classrooms and the learning environment is compromised.”

The Carroll County football team opened its season last Friday with a 36-14 loss to Newport in the debut of head coach Joshua Smith. The Panthers finished 6-5 in 2023 after falling to Leslie County in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

The forfeit victory gives KCD a 1-1 record after the Bearcats dropped their opener to Atherton, 20-7, last week.

KCD will host DeSales at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
