A Louisville mother is in custody after allegedly leaving her three children in "inhumane conditions."

Louisville Metro Police arrested 34-year-old Betty Snider Thursday afternoon on three felony charges each of abandonment of a minor and wanton endangerment and three misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a minor. She is currently being held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on a $50,000 bond.

According to court documents, Jefferson County Public Schools administrators notified authorities of possible endangerment when two students were absent. The oldest sibling, 16, had arrived at school in a state of malnourishment, dehydration and neglect. School officials then became concerned about "possible danger" to the other two children.

Officers arrived at the 7400 block of Home Park Drive shortly after 2 p.m. to find two children, ages 10 and 11, living outdoors without water, electricity and shelter, LMPD spokesperson John Bradley said. Court records obtained by The Courier Journal state the children were without "parental supervision" and "both victims appeared dirty, hungry, and had visible injuries."

The children told detectives the home was filthy and they frequently slept outside in chairs and a swing, or in a tent. They said their mother was aware of the conditions of the house and often left them alone at the location. They were later transported to Norton Children's Hospital for treatment.

Snider told detectives the home was "unlivable" and she hadn't been inside in months. She said her children were unable to shower there and slept outside because of the conditions. She also "admitted to not being at the location for extended periods of time."

Snider is next scheduled to make an appearance for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 9.

LMPD Interim Chief Paul Humphrey said an LMPD officer shot a man at a Walmart near Fairdale
