Louisville football is ranked in the first Associated Press (22nd) and US LBM Football Coaches (24th) polls of the regular season, which were released Tuesday.

Unranked in the preseason polls, a four-touchdown performance by quarterback Tyler Shough in a 62-0 season-opening win over Austin Peay helped U of L earn a spot among the nation's top 25 teams.

It's the earliest Louisville has been ranked in a season since 2017, when it was ranked 17th and 16th in the respective preseason coaches and Associated Press polls. That year, the Cardinals were unranked by season's end and finished 8-5.

Despite not being ranked in the preseason poll, the Cardinals were just outside the top 25 and received 95 votes, the equivalent of 27th, in the coaches poll and 111 votes in the AP poll, the equivalent of 26th.

Louisville is one of four ACC teams in the coaches poll, which includes Miami (No. 15), Clemson (No. 22) and N.C. State (No. 23). The Hurricanes (No. 12), Wolfpack (No. 24) and Tigers (No. 25) also made the AP poll, which includes Georgia Tech (No. 23).

Louisville is set to host Jacksonville State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at L&N Stadium.

I'm thinking it is a bit too early.
