Coaches mess up sometimes, too.
During No. 24 Louisville's 2024 season opener against Austin Peay, Cardinals coach Jeff Brohm admitted he struggled with some of the new technology. This is the first college football season in which in-helmet communication is being used for players.
The Cardinals practiced with it during fall camp and had some technical difficulties that had to get worked out. But this time, it was on Brohm.
"I ain't gonna lie: There's five or six times I forgot to press the button. So, I screwed it up," Brohm said. "At first I said, 'You know what? Maybe I’ll just use a walkie-talkie.' They’re like, 'No, it's probably better to press the button.' I said, ‘Well, I might forget to press the button.’ And I was right."
During the second half, someone — "I'm not going to use any names," Brohm said — forgot to turn on the system, so quarterback Pierce Clar kson couldn't hear his coach. As a result, Brohm had to call a timeout. By the end of the game, the communication ran much smoother.
Having a week of game experience with the new form of communication, Brohm and Co. should be better prepared when the Cardinals play host to Jacksonville State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at L&N Stadium.

- After the 62-0 win over Austin Peay, Louisville is averaging 40.7 points per game under Brohm.
- Saturday's game will be the first time Louisville and Jacksonville State have played in football. The Cardinals are 31-14 against current members of Conference USA.
- If Louisville wins Saturday, it will be the first time since 2016-17 that the Cardinals have gone 2-0 in back-to-back seasons.
Louisville 45, Jacksonville State 3: Starting the season with a 62-0 shutout is certainly a statement and will give the Cardinals the confidence to have another high-scoring performance at home.
