The Valley High School football team , which was off to its best start in nearly a decade, has forfeited three victories from earlier this season after self-reporting a violation to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association .

Valley athletics director Shane Harvey referred all questions to Jefferson County Public Schools , which issued the following statement:

“Valley High School self-reported paperwork errors on two players to KHSAA. The penalty from KHSAA was forfeiture of three wins in which the players participated. Valley is working with the (players’ previous) schools as well as the KHSAA and the players’ families to get the proper paperwork submitted so that the players might be eligible for the remaining games on Valley’s schedule.”

Valley forfeited three previous wins: 38-36 over Southern on Aug. 30, 38-6 over Shawnee on Sept. 6 and 66-8 over Breckinridge County on Sept. 13.

Valley’s 56-30 victory at Waggener on Sept. 26 still stands, leaving the Vikings with a 1-5 record. Had the previous victories stood, the Vikings would be 4-2, matching their best start since the 2016 squad also was 4-2.

A Kentucky High School Athletic Association spokesperson said Valley received no additional penalties “because of the swift and thorough action” of Valley administrators.

Valley’s offense has prospered under first-year head coach DaMarcus Smith, a former star quarterback at Seneca. Averaging 40 points per game when including scores from the forfeited games, the Vikings employ a two-quarterback system featuring senior Mekhi Moore (transfer from Georgia’s South Gwinnett) and junior Jamie Jones (transfer from Holy Cross).

Senior wide receiver DeVuan Jones, a transfer from Indianapolis Lutheran, ranks among the state’s leaders in touchdown receptions (tied for first, 13), receiving yards (second, 843) and receptions (tied for eighth, 37).

Valley is set to host Doss (4-2) at 7 p.m. Friday in a matchup of Class 4A, District Three rivals.
