EVANSVILLE — With just about a month until the first day of fall, residents should prepare for a chillier than normal season, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

"Flannels and umbrellas may be on order when you head out to pick your pumpkin and apples," the report for 2024 states.

Here's what we know about the predictions for the Hoosier state's region.

Frosty, wet weather for the Tri-State

The Almanac is predicting fall to be "frosty and wet" in the Midwest region. Fall officially starts Sept. 22, but the extended forecast from the organization notes there may be cool temps moving in before then.

    The rest of August:

    • 24 - 27: heavy rains gradually subside, turns somewhat cooler, drier.
    • 28- 31: Another round of unseasonably chilly air.

    September:

    • 1- 3: Unseasonably chilly Labor Day
    • 4- 7: Showers, then clearing and unseasonably chilly air extends east from Great Lakes.
    • 8 - 11: Another strong push of unseasonably chilly air spills across Great Lakes, moving south. Heavy showers sweep east out of Ohio River Valley.
    • 12 - 15: Showers, thunderstorms Great Lakes extend south to Kentucky, then cooler.
    • 16 - 19: Showers

What are temperatures typically like for the fall in the Evansville area?

According to the National Weather Service:

    • September: 65-75 degrees
    • October: 53-65 degrees
    • November: 41-52 degrees

    How accurate are these predictions?

There isn't a specific percentage of accuracy available, The Farmer's Almanac has an entire page on its website where visitors can go through previous predictions to see how they ended up.

"Our proprietary formula accounts for shifts and changes of all types and we proudly extend these helpful insights to you before any other publication or news outlet," the site states. "Yet, we recognize and admit that nature will always have the final say."

What does the Old Farmer's Almanac say about the fall?

A completely separate publication, the Old Farmer's Almanac is also predicting chillier than normal temperatures for Indiana.

"The hottest periods will be late July and early August," its forecast projections state. "September and October will be cooler than normal, with above-normal precipitation."

One of the main differences between the two publications is how they divide the country into its regions. The Old Farmer's Almanac splits Indiana in two, with the lower half belonging to a different region than the top half.

The Farmer's Almanac keeps the area whole and in the same region.
