EVANSVILLE – If you have a drone, you won't be allowed to fly it over the Fall Festival.

According to a Friday news release from Evansville Police, the Federal Aviation Administration has placed a temporary flight restriction over skies within a one-mile radius of West Franklin Street for Oct. 6-12.

The rule prohibits the "take off or landing of remote controlled or unmanned aircrafts or drones" during the duration of next month's fest. The ban extends from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day.

Anyone caught breaking the rule could face fines as high as $75,000.

According to the news release, "(Flight restrictions) are issued for safety or security purposes which may include during natural disasters or large crowded events."

EPD spokeswoman Sgt. Trudy Day called the ban "purely precautionary."

"No specific threats have been identified," she said.

But she said as drones become more and more common, the chance of an "accidental or intentional" crash goes up, increasing the risk of injuries to the thousands of people who flood into the Fall Fest.

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival will run the first full week of October, packing Franklin Street with food booths overflowing with fried foods. The Nut Club has said as many as 200,000 people attend each year.

Those wishing for a drone exemption can file an emergency operation request form with the FAA.
