EVANSVILLE — The IHSAA volleyball postseason is almost here.
State runners-up Castle and Tecumseh, as well as Memorial, North Posey and Barr-Reeve, will attempt to defend their sectional titles this month. Will any of those squads (or others) make a deep postseason run? Sectional action begins on Oct. 15.
Here are some quick thoughts on the local brackets.
We will see fireworks right out of the gate in the Class 4A sectional at Castle . The Knights and No. 9 North are the only 20-win teams in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference and will face each other for the third time this season in the semifinals. While North defeated Castle 2-1 at the John Breeding Invitational, the Knights came away with a straight-sets victory on the road Tuesday.
The Class 3A sectional at Jasper should also be exciting. The Wildcats are one of the area's hottest teams and have not lost a five-setter this season. It's likely they will make it out of their bracket for the first time since 2016. But there could be a potential semifinal matchup between Gibson Southern, which drew a bye, and Washington. The Hatchets defeated the Titans in five during their previous meeting in Fort Branch.
Memorial hopes the elevated competition it's faced this season will prepare it for the Class 3A sectional at Mount Vernon . While the Tigers are 12-10 and drew a bye, it could be tough sledding when it comes to winning their fourth straight sectional title. Memorial could be matched up with Heritage Hills in the semifinals, which last won a sectional title in 2017 and is the only other team with a winning record.
Some of the best action in this first round could be at the Class 2A sectional at South Spencer . There are two sectional champions in this field and a ton of talent on both sides of the bracket. While two-time runner-up and No. 4 Tecumseh remains loaded, North Posey and No. 8 Mater Dei could be another semifinal matchup to watch should they meet. The Vikings seek their fourth consecutive sectional title, which had never been done before in program history.
