BRYAN — An Edon woman has been sentenced here in Williams County Common Pleas Court on charges related to a violent episode last year when she attempted to strike a law enforcement officer with her vehicle while under the influence.

Nichole Schmig, 24, was given prison terms totaling 4 1/2 years to 5 1/2 years on charges of attempted felonious assault, a second-degree felony; failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony; and OVI, a first-degree misdemeanor, according to Williams County Prosecutor Katie Zartman’s office.

Schmig also was ordered to make $5,268.95 in restitution to the Williams County Sheriff’s Office, and forfeit her vehicle (a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup) along with two firearms seized in the investigation. Additionally, Schmig was fined $525 and given a seven-year operator’s license suspension.

Credit was given for 13 days served in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio while her case was pending.

The second-degree felony was reduced from felonious assault, a first-degree felony, as part of the plea negotiations between Zartman’s office and Schmig’s attorney, Catherine Purdum of Toledo. Additionally, charges of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; and vandalism, a fifth-degree felony, were dismissed.

Schmig had pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 21 when a pre-sentence investigation was ordered.

The charges stem from an incident on Dec. 6, 2023 when she disregarded a law enforcement officer’s attempt to stop her vehicle, then tried to strike a Williams County Sheriff’s deputy with it. Law enforcement fired shots in return during the incident in Pioneer, but no one was injured.

A pursuit ended when Schmig crashed her vehicle.

She was found to have had a blood alcohol level of .322 while the legal limit is .08, and possessed loaded 9mm and 38-caliber handguns in her vehicle. Both firearms were ordered forfeited.
