VINEMONT, Ala. – On Saturday, Oct. 26, the air will take on the distinctive smell of sticky and sweet barbecue as grill masters and competitors take to the fires for Vinemont’s Chillin’-N-Grillin’ BBQ Fest.

The festival, centered around the best of the best behind the charcoal (or propane), is seeking competitors in three categories: Backyard BBQ, People’s Choice and the Battle of the Heroes. The meat for each team will be provided by the Town through a partnership with The Butcher Meat Co.

The Backyard BBQ competition will center around the grill master and his or her ability to perfectly grill two meats – chicken and/or ribs – judged by a panel of seven local barbecue lovers. The People’s Choice competition is just that – the people’s choice. Tickets are sold at the event allowing attendees to sample grilled wings and cast a vote on the best of the competition, ultimately choosing the champion.

The Battle of the Heroes competition is a crowd favorite year after year. The competition sees local fire, police, EMS and other emergency personnel face off behind the grill to see who makes the best wings. Past years have seen Hero teams from Cullman Fire Rescue, the Hanceville Fire Department, Cullman Police Department and REHAU’s retired fire team.

The cost to participate in the chicken or rib portion of the Backyard BBQ competition is $150; to enter both portions, the cost increases to $225. People’s Choice, if entered independently of the Backyard BBQ competition, carries a fee of $200 and can be bundled with a two-category entry in the Backyard BBQ competition for a total of $275.

To participate in the Battle of the Heroes, or to register for any portion of the Chillin’-N-Grillin’ BBQ Fest, contact Town Clerk Kayecea Sasser at info@townofsouthvinemont.com .

The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 26, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Vinemont Sports Complex. Other activities will include a car and track show, arts and crafts and food vendors, a kids’ zone and live entertainment.
