HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Broncos kicked off their season at home against Appalachian Friday night and it was a nailbiter between them and the Eagles. Holly Pond trailed by three in the final minutes of the fourth, but Appalachian was able to score with just under three minutes on the clock to pull away with a 28-18 win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Appalachian fumbled on the first play of the second and Holly Pond took advantage of the turnover. Broncos Quarterback Sawyer Olinger connected with Brody Howard through the air for a 25-yard touchdown to put Holly Pond in front 6-0 early in the second. However, the Eagles were able to find the end zone twice before the end of the second quarter to take a 14-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Olinger scored from 7 yards out with his legs to cut the lead to 14-12 late in the third quarter but Appalachian responded with a long touchdown run to move back ahead 21-12 midway through the fourth. Boston Gibbs scored on a 15-yard run to make it a 21-18 game with just under five minutes to play but the Eagles put together another scoring drive to stretch their lead to 28-18 and secure the win over the Broncos.

Holly Pond will be back home next week to take on Hanceville.
