    ARC&D awards $70K in grants for flood mitigation

    EDENTON — The Albemarle Resource Conservation and Development Council recently awarded a total of $70,000 in grants to six projects designed to advance natural resource conservation and development in the region.

    In its third cycle grant awards, the ARC&D awarded the town of Winfall $15,000 to install drainage improvements along River Road and Church and Croft streets.

    The Chowan County Soil & Water Conservation District office and Chowan Edenton Environmental Group was awarded $11,000 for water sampling and testing in the Bennett’s Millpond watershed of Rocky Hock Creek.

    Hyde County was awarded $13,000 to complete its renovation and reconstruction of the stormwater drainage system at Davis Ventures Community Center in Engelhard.

    The Dare County Soil & Water Conservation District office was awarded $13,500 for its efforts to clear stream debris and improve drainage in Buxton, East Lake, Hatteras, Manteo, Nags Head and Wanchese.

    The ARC&D awarded IBX Mercantile $12,500 to construct flood damage prevention structures at its location in Columbia.

    The Tyrrell County Soil & Water Conservation District office was awarded $5,000 to remove and replace dilapidated drainage structures serving a drainage district of approximately 800 acres off of U.S. Highway 64 East.

    The ARC&D previously awarded more than $125,000 for nine projects over a two-year period, bringing its total grant awards to nearly $200,000 since 2021.

    The ARC&D invites anyone with ideas about projects that would mitigate flood hazards to apply for its funds. All communities in the agency’s 10-county region are eligible. Project proposal applications can be found at www.albemarlercd.org and emailed to albemarlercd@gmail.com.
