    High School Roundup: Perquimans softball beats previously undefeated Martin County in extra innings

    The Camden County High School baseball team defeated Hertford County by a score of 14-1 Friday evening.

    The Bruins led 2-1 heading into the second inning before opening up for three runs in the second and nine runs in the third to take a 14-1 advantage that held until the fifth inning when the game was run ruled.

    Camden’s T.J. Norvell and Owen Collins combined to give up one earned run on just two hits while striking out 10.

    Wesley Hyatt, Cooper Lewin and Norvell each had two hits for the Bruins. Cillian Doran had three runs batted in while Robbie Beckner had two RBIs.

    Camden was scheduled to take on John A. Holmes High School on the road on Tuesday and then play Holmes at home on Thursday.

    Manteo 6, Northeastern 2The Northeastern Eagles fell to Manteo for the second time in a week, this time by a score of 6-2.

    Northeastern got on the scoreboard first after Cayden Dudley’s sacrifice fly scored Julian Jones in the first inning.

    Manteo responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third to take the lead. They then added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

    Jones, Payton Paris and Carter Stevenson each had two hits for the Eagles. Paris and Dudley also had one RBI each for the Eagles.

    Currituck 19, Pasquotank 0The Currituck County High School baseball team defeated Pasquotank County Friday night 19-0 to run its undefeated string in Northeastern Coastal Conference play to 10-0.

    Kaden Smith had three hits and four RBIs while Riley Anderson had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Knights.

    Caleb Dennis pitched four innings without giving up a hit. He walked three and struck out three. Braden Williams pitched the fifth inning and struck out three and walked one.

    The Knights were scheduled to play Northeastern at home on Tuesday and then on the road on Thursday.

    Perquimans 7, Martin County 3The Perquimans Pirates baseball team scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 7-3 win over Martin County Friday night.

    Martin County got on the board first in the top of the first, but the Pirates exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cameron Goodrow pitched a stellar game to keep Martin County’s bats at bay.

    Goodrow pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on nine hits while striking out five batters.

    Sean Saunders doubled home the first run in the first inning. Will Rucker’s groundout then scored Saunders. Goodrow, Coley Drew and Maddux Thach each followed with run-scoring singles.

    Martin County scored two runs in the second inning, but that was all of their scoring as Goodrow shut the door for the rest of the game.

    The Pirates scored their seventh run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Holmes 9, First Flight 2

    The John A. Holmes Aces baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the eighth Friday night to defeat the First Flight Nighthawks 9-2 in extra innings.

    Holmes got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first. First Flight then answered with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Holmes retook the lead in the fourth inning, but the Nighthawks battled back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game again.

    After the game headed into extra innings, Holmes exploded for seven runs in the top half of the eighth and then held the Nighthawks scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.

    Darius Oliver pitched five innings for the Aces, giving up one run on three hits and six walks while striking out five. Myles Cobb pitched three innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits and striking out three.

    Softball

    Perquimans 10, Martin County 9

    After falling by one run earlier in the week, the Perquimans Pirates softball team defeated previously undefeated Martin County 10-9 in extra innings on Friday night.

    Martin County was 16-0 and 7-0 in Four Rivers Conference play before Perquimans defeated them. Both teams are now 7-1 in the Four Rivers Conference.

    Perquimans jumped on the scoreboard early, plating three runs in the first inning. They followed with four runs in the third inning and two in the fourth.

    Martin County was down 9-5 heading into the sixth inning, but was able to push across four runs to tie the game at nine.

    Bristyl Riddick walked to start the Pirates’ rally in the eighth inning. Elizabeth Gregory flew out to right field and Riddick tagged up to move to second base.

    Kenley Stallings then doubled to score Riddick and give the Pirates the win.

    Manteo 25, Northeastern 10

    Manteo High School and Northeastern High School combined for 35 runs Friday night in a game won by the Redskins 25-10.

    Manteo struck first in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs. Northeastern answered with four runs of their own in the top of the second.

    With the score 5-4 in the bottom of the second, Manteo scored nine runs to take a 14-4 lead.

    The Redskins’ lead grew to 17-4 before the Eagles scored six runs in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 17-10. But the Redskins then scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 25-10 lead and run rule the game.

    Tajera Thompson had one hit for Northeastern while JaMiyah White had two runs batted in for the Eagles.

    Holmes 7, First Flight 3

    The John A. Holmes Aces defeated the First Flight Nighthawks 7-3 on Friday night, sweeping the teams’ season series.

    The Aces trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth inning. Holmes then got a double by Jordan Ward to score Chloe Chappell and tie the game. Mia Hoffer then singled and scored Ward to push Holmes’ lead to 3-2.

    In the top of the seventh the Aces opened up their lead to 6-2 after Ward reached on an error that scored three runs. Hoffer then doubled home another run to make the score 7-2.

    First Flight started the bottom of the seventh with three straight singles, scoring their third run. But they weren’t able to get any more runs across the plate, securing the win for Holmes.

    Currituck 5, Pasquotank 0

    The Currituck County Knights shut out the Pasquotank Panthers 5-0 on Friday night.

    The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Knights scored two runs. They then scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

    Addy Romanczyk pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and striking out eight.

    Amelia Cervantes had three hits for the Knights while Kaydence Hassell had four runs batted in.

    In girls soccer, John A. Holmes High School defeated Lawrence Academy 6-3.
