CAMDEN — The three runs Camden County’s softball team scored in the first inning would prove to be all they needed as the Bruins defeated the Perquimans Pirates 3-2 Wednesday in a battle between two of the area’s top teams.

Ellie Barker started things off with a single, and she was followed by Ruby Arnette who walked. With two runners on, Aaliyah Anderson strode to the plate and hit a home run to put the Bruins up 3-0.

The Pirates got two runs back in the second inning when Elizabeth Gregory hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bristyl Riddick. Perquimans got another run in the inning to cut the Bruins’ lead to 3-2.

But Carlyn Tanis was solid on the mound, allowing the Pirates no more runs after the second inning. She gave up only five hits in the complete-game victory.

The combination of Addisyn Stallings and Makinzie Stokely were just as impressive on the mound for the Pirates, combining to give up just five hits as well while also recording three strikeouts.

Camden is now 14-2 overall and avenges its loss in the season opener to Perquimans. Perquimans is now 15-7 overall, but remain at 8-1 in Four Rivers conference play.
