The Currituck County baseball team used a ten-run first inning to catapult over the Northeastern High School Eagles 17-0 on Friday night.

Riley Anderson had a home run and a single in the first inning, and a single in the second, driving in three runs to lead the Knights.

Michael Sawyer and Kaden Smith both singled home two runs, while Will Brumsey singled home one.

Caleb Dennis, Cayden Barth and Anderson combined for a one-hitter over five innings, walking four batters and striking out 11.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Knights, as they head into a pivotal two-game series with First Flight this week. They face the Nighthawks, who are two games back of the Knights for first place in the Northeastern Coastal Conference. If Currituck wins one of the two games, they will be the regular-season champions.

Currituck’s first game against First Flight was scheduled for Tuesday on the road. The second, which is at home, is set for Thursday.

    First Flight 2, Pasquotank 0

The First Flight Nighthawks baseball team scored two runs on two hits in the first inning and that would be all they needed to defeat the Pasquotank Panthers 2-0 in Kill Devil Hills on Friday night.

Owen LaVier and Aaron Stewart both singled home a run in the bottom of the first inning. Theirs were the Nighthawks’ only hits in the game.

Issac Miles pitched a complete game for the Nighthawks, giving up two hits and no walks while striking out 12 Panther hitters.

Nathan Rice pitched a complete game for the Panthers, giving up no runs or hits after the first inning. He walked two and struck out five Nighthawk hitters.

John Leary and Gabriel Gonzalez collected the two hits for the Panthers.

First Flight ends its Northeastern Coastal Conference schedule next week against Currituck on Tuesday and Thursday. Pasquotank will finish its regular season against Northeastern on Thursday and Friday.

    Gates County 5, Perquimans 3

After losing to Perquimans earlier in the week, the Red Barons came back on Friday and evened their season series with the Pirates with a 5-3 win Friday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but Gates County answered with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.

The Red Barons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Perquimans mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases thanks to two singles and a walk. But the next batter lined out to end the game.

Maddux Thach had three hits in the game for the Pirates, while Coley Drew and Sean Saunders each drove in a run for the Pirates.

    Softball

    Perquimans 11, Gates County 1

The Perquimans County Pirates softball team finished off its week on a high note by defeating the Gates County Red Barons 11-1 on Friday night.

Gates County scored first in the top of the first, but Perquimans then answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. The Pirates added one run in the second inning, four in the third inning and one in the fifth to run-rule the game after five innings.

Bristyl Riddick and Mackenzie Stokely pitched two innings each while Addisyn Stallings pitched one inning, holding the Red Barons to one run and only two hits.

Indya Long led the Pirates at the plate, collecting three hits and three runs batted in. Morgan Baccus also had three hits and two runs batted in, while Kaydee Hunter had two hits and two runs batted in.

The win moved Perquimans to 16-7 overall and 8-1 in Four Rivers Conference play.

    First Flight 8, Pasquotank 0

The First Flight Nighthawks softball team used a five-run third inning en route to a 8-0 shutout of Pasquotank Friday, completing their sweep of the Panthers last week.

Riley Gilreath pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, walking one and striking out seven to lead the Nighthawks.

Natalee Meads pitched for the Lady Panthers, giving up eight runs, only two of which were earned. She gave up nine hits, walked two batters and struck out six.

Marissa Norman was the lone Pasquotank player to get a hit in the game.

The Panthers head into the final week of the season with games against cross-county rival Northeastern on the road on Thursday and at home on Friday.

    Soccer

    Holmes 10, Albemarle School 1

The Holmes girls soccer team defeated Albemarle School 10-1 on Friday night.

The Aces scored seven goals in the first half and three in the second half. The Colts scored their lone goal in the second half.
