    High School Roundup: Camden rallies in 7th to beat SW Onslow 3-2

    CAMDEN —The Camden County Bruins rallied with three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning Tuesday to come back and defeat the Southwest Onslow Stallions 3-2 in the 2A NCHSSA Baseball State Championship playoffs.

    Robbie Beckner, struck the big blow, doubling in two runners in Camden’s home half of the seventh. Cooper Lewin also had a hit and knocked in a run in the inning.

    Cole Roberts led the Bruins with three hits. He also scored a run. Adam Gregory also had two hits and scored a run. Dylan Jones and Wesley Hyatt also had a hit each.

    Bradley Elias pitched seven innings and earned the win. He gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. He also struck out five Stallion hitters.

    Camden, 17-5, and ranked No. 5, faces 20th-ranked Bartlett Yancey, 13-7, on Friday.

    Perquimans 14, North Duplin 1The Perquimans County Pirates defeated the North Duplin Rebels 14-1 Tuesday in the 1A NCHSSA Baseball State Championship playoffs.

    The Pirates jumped on the Rebels in the first three innings, scoring three, four and seven runs in successive frames. North Duplin managed only one run and the game was run-ruled after five innings.

    Cameron Goodrow and Maddux Thach led the Pirates’ 11-hit attack, as each collected three hits. Goodrow also scored two runs and knocked in a run. Thach scored three runs.

    Brady Shepherd and Sean Saunders each had two hits. Shepherd, who doubled, also drove in two and scored a run. Saunders scored two runs.

    Colin Roberts knocked in three runs and scored one. Jacob Askew had a hit, knocked in two runs, and scored three times.

    Evan Conway and Ben Brown also each had a run batted in.

    Thach pitched three innings to record the win. He gave up one unearned run on one hit. He walked one and struck out four Rebel hitters. Conner Futrell pitched two innings. He gave up no runs or hits, walked three and struck out one hitter.

    Currituck 8, Swansboro 2

    The 7th-ranked Currituck County Knights defeated the 24th-ranked Swansboro Pirates 8-2 Tuesday in the 3A NCHSSA Baseball State Championship playoffs.

    Currituck scored two runs in both the first and second innings, and followed with four in the fourth. Swansboro got single runs in both the first and third innings.

    Game stats from the game for the Knights were not available at press time for this story.

    Softball

    Camden 9, James Kenan 0

    The Camden County Bruins shut out the James Kenan Tigers 9-0 Tuesday in the 2A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

    Camden, which is ranked No. 3, scored two runs in the third and fourth innings and followed that with three in the fifth and two in the sixth.

    Carlyn Tanis pitched a complete game shutout, giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out three Tiger hitters.

    Tanis also had a hot day at the plate, slapping two triples, knocking in a run and scoring two.

    Tessa Darden and Emma Young both had three hits for the Bruins. Young also knocked in two runs while Darden scored a run.

    Audrey Jones had two hits and knocked in a run, while Kaitlynn Barnes had a hit, a run batted in and scored a run. A. Anderson also knocked in a run and scored a run. Julia Doppler also had a hit and scored a run.

    Ayden-Grifton 10, Holmes 7

    The John A. Holmes High School Aces lost to Ayden-Grifton Chargers 10-7 in extra innings Tuesday in the 2A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

    Holmes scored runs in the first and fourth innings and followed that up with three in the fifth and single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Ayden-Grifton scored three in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth.

    Chloe Chappell and Marley Harrell both homered for the Aces in the loss. Chappell had three hits, knocked in a run and scored three times. Harrell had two hits, knocked in three runs and scored twice.

    Mia Hoffer also had two runs batted in. Ainsley Parrish and Ellie Spear each had a hit.

    Chappell pitched eight innings, giving up 10 runs, only five of which were earned. She scattered 11 hits, walked three and struck out eight Charger hitters.

    Midway 9, Pasquotank 0

    The Pasquotank Panthers lost to the Midway Raiders 9-0 Tuesday in the 2A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

    Chloe Simmons and Natalee Meads got the Panthers’ only two hits in the game.

    Lanna Wise pitched two innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit. Meads pitched four innings, giving up seven runs, only two of which were earned. She scattered six hits and struck out three Raider hitters.

    Currituck 7, Eastern Wake 3

    The Currituck Knights defeated the Eastern Wake Warriors 7-3 on Tuesday in the 3A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

    The No. 18-ranked Knights got off to a quick start, scoring a run in the first inning and two in the second. The Warriors scored two in the third and one in the fifth, but the Knights put the game away with four runs in home fifth.

    Addy Romanczyk led the Knights with two hits. She also scored a run. K. Hassell had a triple, knocked in two runs and scored two runs. Kendra Daniels and Mimi Shields both got a hit and batted in a run. Taylor Clark also had a hit, knocked in a run and scored a run. K. Belangia had a hit and scored twice. Savannah Banks and A. Cervantes both had an RBI.

    Romanczyk pitched seven innings for a complete-game win. She gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks. She also struck out six Warrior hitters.

    In other area softball games, the Perquimans Pirates defeated the East Wake Academy Eagles 15-0 in the 1A NCHSSA Softball State Championship playoffs.

    In area girls soccer, Camden was shut out by Northeastern Coastal Conference foe Manteo 6-0 on Tuesday.
