    Updated: Area high school graduation ceremonies underway

    The Albemarle’s always busy high school graduation season got underway the weekend before last and continues over the next two weekends.

    Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Early College kicked things off with its commencement ceremony at College of The Albemarle’s Performing Arts Center in Elizabeth City on Friday, May 18. Sicily Hegge was the class valedictorian and Yoselin Molina- Dominguez was class salutatorian.

    Camden Early College held its commencement ceremony at COA-Elizabeth City on Thursday, May 23. Twenty-eight graduates received their diplomas during the ceremony. Twenty of the graduates also received their associate degree by virtue of being dually enrolled at COA. Kayla Heath was the class valedictorian and Angelyna Brooks was the salutatorian. Dr. Derrike Black, a teacher at the school, was the keynote speaker.

    J P. Knapp Early College High School held its graduation ceremony on Friday, May 24, also at the COA Performing Arts Center. Fifty-one graduates received their diplomas. Kayla DePlacido was the class valedictorian and Sara Peck was salutatorian. Knapp Principal Christian Lowe was the keynote speaker.

    The Albemarle School, an Elizabeth City-based private school, also held its graduation ceremony for 14 seniors on Friday, May 24. Sydney Abeyounis was the class valedictorian and Emiley Harris was salutatorian. Perry Vann Dawson, an Albemarle School alumnus from the Class of 2009, was the keynote speaker.

    Two schools will hold commencement exercises this week. Perquimans County High School and the Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies both will hold graduation on Friday.

    Perquimans will hold its graduation at 7 p.m. at the Charles H. Ward Football Field at the Nixon Athletic Complex. Each graduate will receive 10 tickets to give to guests. Umbrellas, balloons, noisemakers, and bags are not allowed.

    NEAAAT will hold its graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at College of The Albemarle’s Performing Arts Center. Entry will be granted by tickets which were issued in advance. No streamers or balloons are allowed inside the building.

    The area’s other high schools will hold commencement the following weekend.

    Camden High School’s graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, on the school football field. In the event of rain, graduation will be held in the school gymnasium. Students will receive eight entry tickets; overflow seating will be in the cafeteria. The school will livestream the ceremony.

    Pasquotank County High School’s graduation ceremony also will be held Friday, June 7, at the R.L. Vaughan Center at Elizabeth City State University. Ceremony attendees can begin filing in at 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. ceremony. Attendees will be required to present an admission ticket before entry.

    Currituck County High School will hold its graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, on the school’s football field. Riley Parker is the class valedictorian Grace Walls is the salutatorian.

    In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the gymnasium, where only four visitors per graduate allowed entry. Overflow seating will be held in the cafe where the ceremony will be livestreamed in the event of rainy weather.

    John A. Holmes High School will hold its graduation ceremony on the football field. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. and close at 6:50 p.m. for the 7 p.m. ceremony. No balloons, silly string or umbrellas will be allowed.

    One-hundred forty-two seniors are scheduled to graduate. The class valedictorian and salutatorian are scheduled to speak but their identities won’t be known until grades are finalized.

    Northeastern High School’s graduation ceremony will be held Saturday, June 8, at the R.L. Vaughan Center at ECSU. Ceremony attendees can begin filing in at 8:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. ceremony. Attendees will be required to present an admission ticket before entering.
