    Perquimans 27, Manteo 0

HERTFORD — The Perquimans Pirates connected on pass plays four times for touchdowns Friday night en route to a 27-0 blanking of Manteo High School in a non-conference season opener for both teams.

The game, played at Perquimans in Hertford, was scoreless until the Pirates found the end zone on a touchdown pass with 3 minutes left in the first half. The two-point conversion failed but Perquimans led 6-0.

Manteo and Perquimans would turn the ball over on downs — Manteo twice — before halftime so the score remained 6-0, Pirates, at the break.

The Pirates would attempt an onside kick to start the third quarter, but Manteo recovered the ball at its own 47-yard line.

Manteo couldn't cash in on the good field possession, however, and turned the ball over on downs to the Pirates. The visitors got the ball right back, however, on a Perquimans' fumble.

With 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Pirates returned the favor, intercepting a Manteo pass. Starting at their own 22-yard line, the Pirates connected on a long pass play, moving the ball to their own 43-yard line. Another long pass completion would move the ball to Manteo's 34.

A minute later, the Pirates would again find the end zone on a touchdown pass. The point-after-kick failed, but the Pirates increased their lead to 12-0.

Manteo would move the ball on the ensuing kickoff but the drive stalled at the Pirates' 37-yard line and the visitors turned the ball over on downs.

Perquimans then connected for another long pass play, giving the Pirates the ball at the Manteo 11-yard line just before the end of the 3rd quarter.

Minutes later, the Pirates would find the end zone on a third passing touchdown. A successful rushing two-point conversion increased Perquimans' lead to 20-0 with just a minute gone in the 4th quarter.

After Manteo's drive on the ensuing possession stalled, the Pirates took over the ball with 9 minutes remaining. Perquimans would connect five minutes later for its fourth passing touchdown of the night. A successful point-after-kick increased the Pirates' lead to 27-0.

The Pirates would seal their victory on the ensuing possession, intercepting a Manteo pass.

    Norfolk Academy 34, Currituck 21

NORFOLK, Va. — The Currituck County Knights lost their season opener on the road, losing to Norfolk Academy 34-21 in a non-conference game on Friday night.

The Knights would score their second touchdown on a pass completion with 5 minutes to go, trimming the Bulldog lead to 28-14.

But the Bulldogs added a rushing touchdown two minutes later to pad their lead to 34-14. The point-after try missed.

CAMDEN —The Camden County Bruins lost their season opener on Friday to Northside-Pinetown 24-3 in a non-conference game.

The game was scoreless until under a minute left in the first half when the Panthers' kicker connected for a field goal. The Panthers would intercept a Bruin pass on the ensuing possession but were unable to cash in. The score remained 3-0 at halftime.

The Bruins would tie the game with a field goal with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

But on the ensuing possession, the Panthers would connect for a passing touchdown. The point-after-kick would make the score 10-3, Panthers.

The Panthers would intercept the Bruins again with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter but again weren't able to cash in. The Bruins forced them to punt with 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Two minutes later, the Panthers returned a Bruin punt for a touchdown. The point-after-kick increased their lead to 17-3.
