The long wait for Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches in Elizabeth City is just about over.

Chick-fil-A Inc. said the long-awaited reopening of its restaurant at 1706 W. Ehringhaus Street will happen Thursday morning.

"It’s our pleasure to confirm we will be reopening Chick-fil-A Elizabeth City on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6:30 a.m.,” the company said in a statement.

The message board on the restaurant's outdoor sign proclaimed the same thing.

The Elizabeth City Chick-fil-A, which officially opened on Sept. 29, 2011, closed for a remodeling project months ago but company officials did not say when the store would reopen. In a statement last month, Chick-fil-A said the store would be reopening "next month."

"The remodel will feature an expanded drive-thru to improve overall traffic flow, upgraded kitchen and refreshed finishes to the dining room and interior to enhance Team Member and Guest experience," the statement said. "We look forward to continuing to serve our Guests delicious food in an environment of genuine hospitality."

The most significant exterior work appears to be the restaurant's expanded drive-thru area.

Based in College Park, Georgia, Chick-fil-A is known for its signature chicken sandwiches. The restaurant chain has independent owner-operators who operate more than 3,000 Chick-fil-A restaurants across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. In 2023, the company shared plans to expand by 2030 into Europe and Asia. The family-owned and privately held company was founded in 1967 by S. Truett Cathy.
