The local U.S. Coast Guard base has been operating under a boil water notice for the last several months.

Cmdr. Heidi Koski, commanding officer of Base Elizabeth City, said last week that “due to low chlorine levels” the base has been under a precautionary boil water notice since July 9.

“We are actively managing the situation, and we’ve been engaged with municipal water authorities to address the problem,” Koski said in an email. “The notice is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all personnel.”

Koski said though she couldn’t confirm a timeline for when potable water levels would return to normal, the situation is a priority for base personnel. In the meantime, temporary measures, such as providing bottled water and forming water contracts, have been implemented, she said.

Koski assumed command of Base Elizabeth City during a change of command ceremony held in July 2023.

Prior to assuming command at Base Elizabeth City, Koski was assigned to the Coast Guard’s Patrol Boat Product Line in Norfolk, Virginia.
