An Elizabeth City woman died following a traffic collision on Pitts Chapel Road in Pasquotank County on Sunday.

Trooper O.E. Calloway of the N.C. Highway Patrol identified the deceased woman as Patricia Dooley, 87, of the 900 block of Bateman Drive.

According to Calloway, Dooley was driving her 2017 Buick Encore east on Perkins Lane around 11:06 a.m. when she failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn at the Pitts Chapel Road intersection. Her Encore collided with a 2007 Hyundai Sante Fe driven by Jamel Mccullen, 26, of the 800 block of Robinson St., Elizabeth City, the trooper said. Mccullen’s Sante Fe was traveling south on Pitts Chapel Road before the collision.

Dooley was transported from the scene by emergency medical services personnel to a landing zone on Consolidated Road where she was to be airlifted by helicopter to a medical facility, but she succumbed to her injuries en route, the trooper said.

Mccullen was transported from the scene to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Calloway said. He was not able to get a condition on Mccullen but a SAMC spokeswoman said Friday that he was no longer a patient at the hospital.

Mccullen was cited following the accident for driving without insurance and not wearing a seatbelt, Calloway said.

Mccullen's Sante Fe was traveling an estimated 60 mph before the collision, the trooper said. The speed limit for the area near the Pitts Chapel Road-Perkins Lane intersection is 55 mph.

Conditions at the time were rainy and the roadway was wet, but neither were contributing factors to the collision, Calloway said.
