The husband-and-wife owners of Montero’s Restaurant will be honored next month with the Albemarle Area United Way’s fifth annual Keel Club Philanthropy Award.

The AAUW will honor Andy and Karin Montero with the award during its Keel Club Philanthropy Award Dinner at Seven Sounds Brewing Co. on Thursday, Nov. 21.

“We consider it a privilege to honor Andy and Karin with our fifth Philanthropy Award,” AAUW Executive Director Bill Blake said in a press release. “They have quietly given dollars, donated time and talent to benefit many, especially nonprofits, in our community. Andy and Karin epitomize the meaning of servant leadership.”

Tammy Sawyer, Albemarle Area United Way board chair, noted that Nov. 15 is National Philanthropy Day so the board’s timing for the dinner “coincides nicely” with its desire to honor the Monteros.

The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will include a cocktail reception, musical entertainment and dinner catered by Sagos on the River. Corporate tables and sponsorships are available. Individual tickets are $65 and can be purchased online at aaunitedway.org, by calling 252-333-1510, or visiting the AAUW office at 1413 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City.

According to an AAUW press release, Keel Club is an apt name for those who make significant donations to the AAUW and the community at large.

“The keel of a ship is the main timber of the ship’s bottom that extends from bow to stern and supports the whole frame,” the release states. “The keel is designed carefully and prepared through the efforts of many people working together for a common purpose. United Way is stronger because of these generous leadership donors.”

The Monteros will be the fifth recipients of the Keel Club Philanthropy Award. Previous winners include area business leader Bill Taylor, who received the award last year; Forbes Homes owner Harley Cole; longtime philanthropists Bruce and Anna Biggs; and the late Dr. Willis Jackson “Jack” Grant III.
