Lafayette-area football: Here are the Top 5 offensive players from Week 4

In Week 4 of high school football in the Lafayette Parish and surrounding areas, teams scored more touchdowns than your fingers could count.

With some teams kicking off district play and others trying to pick up non-district wins, every team had something to prove and it showed. Offensive explosions led to big wins this week and stat-stuffing numbers for the elite athletes behind the victories.

The five players that make up this week’s Top 5 Offensive Players list scored 20 total touchdowns putting up video game numbers. They put defenses to shame while picking up key dubs to help maintain perfect seasons for Teurlings Catholic, St. Edmund and Vermilion Catholic. For Rayne, it puts the Wolves at 1-0 in district play and for Catholic-New Iberia to a 3-1 record.

Here is a breakdown of the Daily Advertiser’s Week 4 Top 5 Offensive Players of the Week hailing from the 337.

1. Jonathan Dartez

School: Vermilion Catholic

Position: Quarterback

Year: Senior

Summary: This marks Dartez’s second week in the top five as he continues to prove he can’t be stopped. The senior slinger let it fly against Erath in a battle of two previously undefeated teams. He threw for 202 yards on 10 out of 17 completions connecting with his receivers for three touchdowns.

If the passing game wasn’t there, Dartez had no problem making the Bobcats pay on the ground. He was like a workhorse for the Screaming Eagles carrying the ball 32 times for 168 yards and another three touchdowns. With Dartez playing like he is, they will look to continue to build on their four-game winning streak.

2. Luke Landry

School: Catholic-New Iberia

Position: Quarterback

Year: Senior

Summary: The Panthers went back and forth with Notre Dame but Landry was the difference maker. Whenever the Pioneers ground game would find the end zone, he provided the answer finding his receivers all game long. In the second half, he locked in and helped his team take the game over.

The 6-foot and 180-pound senior threw for 327 yards and finished the game with five total touchdowns. His relentless offensive contribution helped Catholic-New Iberia beat a tough Notre Dame team 42-28. Landry will look to build off this performance next week in a non-district matchup vs. Lake Charles College Prep.

3. Doug E Viltz

School: Teurlings Catholic

Position: Running back

Year: Senior

Summary: Along with Dartez, Viltz makes his second appearance on the Daily Advertiser's Top 5 Offensive Players list as he continues to strive for 1,000 yards rushing this season. The power back came through clutch for the Rebels against a good Westgate team to kick off class 4A District 4 play.

Viltz carried the ball 22 times for 209 yards and four touchdowns helping Teurlings win 42-20. Not only did he help his team move the chains with solid gains but he found all kinds of running lanes in the Tigers’ defense. His longest touchdown run of the game was 67 yards.

4. Kane West

School: St. Edmund

Position: Quarterback

Year: Senior

Summary: The Fighting Blue Jays maintain perfection after four weeks of play and at the helm of their offense is West. The senior slinger had a stellar game in his team's class 1A District 5 opener against North Central.

He threw for 172 yards on 4 out of 11 completions and found the end zone three times. Even with sharing snaps with junior Nathan Zaunbrecher and freshman Ben Miller, he made the most of every snap he got. He also rushed for a touchdown from 6 yards out leading St. Edmund to a 47-8 victory.

5. Kylin Wheeler

School: Rayne

Position: Wide receiver

Year: Senior

Summary: Wheeler did a little bit of everything for the Wolves as they picked up their first district win over Comeaux. The 5-foot-11 speedy wideout finished the game with a touchdown in the air and on the ground to handle the Spartans for a 34-20 win.

He carried the ball six times for 88 yards and a touchdown. Wheeler also made three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. With this win, Rayne now sits at 2-2 on the season with a win over Comeaux and Beau Chene. The Wolves will face Northside next week continuing class 4A District 4 play.
