SOUTHAMPTON TWP. ― A tractor-trailer sustained disabling all-around damage and the driver was taken to an area hospital with suspected serious injuries after an accident early Wednesday on Wellersburg mountain.

More: Route 160 just north of Wellersburg closed because of tractor-trailer accident

Mgdi Almansoob, 20, Detroit, Michigan, was taken to UPMC Western Maryland Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland, after the 4:32 a.m. accident on Route 160, Cumberland Highway just east of Grandview Drive, state police said.

Police say Almansoob was traveling south on Cumberland Highway. The impact occurred as the truck began to negotiate a right-hand curve, left the southbound travel lane and struck a guard rail on the left side of the road. The vehicle continued to travel off the road into an embankment, striking a utility pole and a series of trees.

The truck and its trailer overturned onto its right passenger side and came to a final rest facing south, police said.Wellersburg and Meyersdale fire departments and numerous Maryland units were dispatched, according to the Somerset County 911 Center. Towing service was requested.

    No trucks allowed

In January 2019, PennDOT installed a 13-ton weight limit on the 3.7-mile section of southbound Route 160 from Glencoe Road to the Maryland state line in Wellersburg Borough for safety reasons after several tractor-trailer accidents happened on that part of the steep mountain road.

Trucks carrying loads weighing more than 13 tons, except local deliveries, are not permitted to travel Route 160 over Wellersburg Mountain. Trucks carrying loads more than 13 tons are to follow a signed detour route from Berlin onto Route 219 south into Maryland and then onto Interstate 68.
