CAMBRIDGE − Dr. Rebekah Wood has joined the surgical staff at OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center.

Wood, who was born in Cambridge and graduated from Shenandoah High School, has returned to her roots after completing her medical training at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine and a general surgery residency at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, according to a news release from the medical center.

“I am excited to start my practice, serve Cambridge and the surrounding communities and work with my long-time mentor, Dr. Michael Sarap,” Wood said in the release. “I am also looking forward to spending more time with my family.”

"Dr. Wood has received accolades at each level of her training for her knowledge, skills, leadership and teaching activities,” said Sarap, a general surgeon also with Southeastern Medical Center. “She is a published author and has lectured at national conferences. We are excited to partner with her to continue to provide advanced surgical, endoscopic and robotic procedures and high-quality care with a personal touch for patients in southeastern Ohio."

Wood has maintained a close connection to Cambridge throughout her career. She began shadowing Dr. Sarap in junior high and continued to do so during high school, college and medical school. Her family still resides on the same farm she grew up on, about 30 minutes from Cambridge.

“I go to visit them as often as I can,” she said in the release. “I grew up playing cards with my grandparents and am very lucky to still have that opportunity."

Recently married to Tony Wever, she is in the process of changing her last name.

Wood will be specializing in general, thoracic, vascular, pediatric hernia umbilical hernia and trauma surgery, as well as robotics, endoscopy and wound care at Southeastern Medical Center.

“Her return is a testament to the vibrancy of the Cambridge community and we are honored she’s chosen Southeastern Medical Center as the place to establish her medical practice," said hospital president Wendy Elliott.
