Meadowbrook converts game-winning two-minute drive to slip past John Glenn

BYESVILLE − Been there, done that thanks to plenty of preparation in a two-minute situation.

That was the way Meadowbrook senior QB Justice Huey explained the Colts' game-winning TD drive to capture a thrilling 21-17 Muskingum Valley League win over John Glenn at Eugene Capers Field Friday night.

"Every day at the end of practice we do a two-minute drill to work on this exact situation," Huey said. "And our coaches put us in situations where they odds are against us. I remember Thursday night [it] started at the 12-yard line with just 1:12 to get down the field against our scout defense."

"We practice those type of situations over and over again, so we were comfortable and confident tonight," Huey added. "So I credit Coach Norman and the other coaches for having us prepared for any situation. We just executed like we are taught to do."

This real game scenario unfolded after John Glenn's standout senior kicker Will Nicolozakes drilled a clutch 26-yard field goal to give the Muskies a 17-14 lead with just 1:45 left in the game.

Meadowbrook took over on the ensuing possession on it's own 24-yard line with 1:33 left in the game and calmly went to work.

Huey led the Colts down the field 76 yards to pay dirt, capping the clutch game-winning drive by hitting junior Brayden Black with a 3-yard touchdown pass for a 21-17 lead with just 12.1 seconds left on the clock.

Colts' Norman was confident in his senior gunslinger

"Credit Justice with just having total composure in that situation," Meadowbrook head coach Steve Norman said. "Their defense didn't give us much all night, we knew coming in they were a tough group. "But Justice is a really heady QB who seems to have a knack for coming up with unorthodox plays when we need them.

"Just a great job by Justice and our line of wanting it badly." Norman continued. "They just kept battling to give us a great win against a very good team. Hats off to our defense who kept us in the game all night, especially in that first half when we didn't help them out much."

Huey put together a big night through the air, connecting on 30-of-42 passes for 302 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. Lowery hauled in nine receptions for 101 yards with a TD, and Bentley Sedor finished with seven catches for 69 yards.

Muskies second half rally, Nicolozakes clutch field goal not enough

John Glenn struggled in the first half with a pair of costly turnovers to result in a 7-0 deficit at the halftime break. But, they came back strong to open up the second half.

The Muskies (1-1 MVL, 3-3) would score back-to-back unanswered touchdowns to open the second half, with senior Lincoln Gilcher's 2-yard plunge into the end zone giving the visitors a 14-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. Huey would answer and get the Colts back even at 14-14 with a 29-yard TD to junior Braylon Lowery.

Nicoloazakes would then split the uprights with his clutch field goal to give John Glenn the late 17-14 lead with 1:41 left in the contest.

But that set the stage for Meadowbrook's final clutch two-minute scoring drive to secure the win to improve to 1-1 in the MVL and 3-3 overall.

Gilcher churned out a big night running the ball with 151 yards on 19 carries with a TD. John Glenn QB Owen Edwards hit on 14-of-19 passing attempts for 101 yards.
