BUDE — A prescribed fire is in progress on the Homochitto National Forest south of Bude in Franklin County Thursday. United States Forest Service is tasked with conducting prescribed fires for hazarouds fuel load reduction and habitat improvement.

According to the USFS Prescribed burn tracker, the planned area is to the west of US98 and just south of Yap Road. Ignigition for the burn was an aerial ignition and was set to start at 10:30 a.m. Nearly 2,635 acres will be burned in the planned burn unit.

“Crews, equipment, a drone module and engines will be working in this location today. Air quality and visibility will be effected by smoke in and near the burn area,” the USFS stated in a release. “Fire crews will be working along roads to contain this burn. We ask that you would please use caution when travelling in these areas.”
