BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns Lincoln County and other surrounding counties in southwest Mississippi are under increased fire danger Thursday. The threat is limited but anyone attempting to burn should proceed with caution.

NWS Jackson advises anyone who is attempting open burning should use extra caution. Low humidity and gusty winds raised the wildfire danger concern going into this afternoon. Mississippi Forestry Commission advised people check their local forecast and to not burn on windy days.

Winds are forecast to be at 10 mph sustained speeds and gusts reaching 25 mph. People can take steps to prevent wildfires by not allowing trailer chains to drag on the roadways or by disposing of cigarettes properly and not on the ground.

Loyd Star Volunteer Fire Department responded to a tree that had fallen on a power line and was smoking Thursday around noon. Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Reid said that was the only fire call so far Thursday.
