BROOKHAVEN — Wednesday might be one of the hottest days of the year. High temperatures are forecast to reach 99 degrees with a heat index of 107. The National Weather Service office in Jackson issued a heat advisory for Lincoln County and Southwest Mississippi.

It is likely the heat advisory will continue tomorrow. Temperatures are forecast to reach 98 with a heat index of 107. A 40 percent chance of rain is currently in the forecast with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. A 40 percent chance of rain will continue Friday and Saturday with high temperatures reaching 96 and 97.

Sunday and Monday could reach high temperatures of 98 degrees while Tuesday reaches a high of 96.

Lincoln County is currently listed as under abnormally dry conditions according to the United States Department of Agriculture drought information page. In total, 89.7 percent of the county is under abnormally dry conditions.

Conditions are getting just right for wildfires to start again. East Lincoln and Hog Chain Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a wildfire Tuesday evening in Fair River. Mississippi Forestry Commission and Lawrence County Volunteer Firefighters helped contain the wildfire. At this time, there are no active burn bans in Mississippi.

It is unknown if Hurricane Ernesto, in the Caribbean and expected to turn back out into the Atlantic, will bring any needed rain to the region.
