Lincoln County under excessive heat warning

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for Lincoln County and other parts of southwest Mississippi. The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Temperatures could reach a high of 97 with a heat index of 107 today. NWS Jackson forecasts a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Friday’s conditions will not feel any cooler. NWS Jackson forecasts a 50 percent chance of rain, a high of 95 degrees and a heat index of 110. It should be pretty humid.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday afternoon as well.

High temperatures and heat indices are prime for heat stress conditions. NWS Jackson warns southwest Mississippi is at an extreme risk for heat stress. Heat stroke will be imminent with prolonged outdoor activity going into the weekend.

While NWS Jackson forecasts severe thunderstorms around Jackson Friday and Saturday, the storms do not look to threaten Lincoln County. Parts of Copiah County could see severe storms Saturday afternoon.

Drought conditions continue to persist in Lincoln County. According to the US Drought Monitor in Lincoln, Nebraska, Lincoln County is considered abnormally dry which is an early stage of drought. Regions of northern Mississippi have reached moderate drought conditions.

According to Mississippi Forestry Commission, there are no active burn bans. Conditions are starting to get ideal for wildfires to pick up in volume and intensity.
