BROOKHAVEN — NASA reports a supermoon blue moon will be visible starting Sunday although technically the full moon is Monday with peak illumination at 1:26 p.m.. The supermoon will appear full for three days. from Sunday morning through Wednesday morning.

Supermoon means the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to earth. It will be the first of four supermoons including supermoons in Septemeber and October.

The supermoon will also be a blue moon,  no not the beer, meaning it is the second full moon in a month.

The Farmers Almanac states the supermoon is called the Sturgeon Moon.

“The name Sturgeon Moon comes from the giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain; this native freshwater fish was readily caught during this part of summer and an important food staple for Native Americans who lived in the region. At one time the lake sturgeon was quite abundant in late summer, though they are rarer today,” The Farmers Almanac states.

To view the supermoon blue moon wait until 7:59 p.m. for the moon rise and look to the east/southeast.
