National Weather Service warns of fire danger

BROOKHAVEN — Dry, windy conditions have placed Lincoln County and much of Mississippi in fire danger. All it takes is one spark for a wildfire to start or a fire to get out of control.

According to the National Weather Service, extra caution is advised with open burning Wednesday through Thursday. Low humidity, drying vegetation and breezy conditions could allow for fires to spread quickly. Do not let chains drag along the roadway as sparks could start wildfires along the roadway. Remember to dispose of cigarettes properly and not on the ground.

Mississippi Forestry Commission reports there are no active burn bans in the state at this time.

Fire crews from MFC responded to a wildfire on Waston Road just west of Shady Grove Lane at the Copiah, Lincoln County line. Volunteer firefighters from Copiah County and Lincoln County were on scene to protect structures. A dead tree knocked down a power line sparking the fire on Watson. Firefighters with Bogue Chitto and Hog Chain Volunteer Fire Departments fought a wildfire on US51 Tuesday afternoon as well.

Nine out of 10 wildfires are caused by human error. Remember to be fire wise and check conditions before and during a burn. It is wise to establish a fire break of bare mineral dirt to contain a controlled burn.
