Oakland football lost it's top player on the first play of its first game Friday night.

How long senior running back and USC commitment Daune Morris may be out is still unknown. Morris suffered an ankle injury on the Patriots' first play from scrimmage during their 35-0 win at Independence.

"He has an ankle injury that he's going to get X-rayed (Saturday)," Oakland coach Kevin Creasy said.

Morris was among the preseason favorites to win the Class 6A Mr. Football award, coming off a junior season in which he was a finalist, combining for more than 2,500 yards and 36 touchdowns in leading the Patriots to the 6A state title game.

In his absence Friday, junior Craig Tutt (five carries, 90 yards, two TDs), senior and Brentwood Academy transfer TT Hill (six carries for 29 yards and a 77-yard TD reception) and sophomore Kemani Bass (two carries, 43 yards) stepped up to lead Oakland (1-0).

"Kemani went in for him and did a good job, and TT and Tutt did their job," Creasy said. "We had to throw it a little more with (senior quarterback Kyler Creasy). He had a good game."

Kyler Creasy was 7-of-9 for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Patriots will travel to face the defending Texas 4A champs in Anna next week.
