MTSU football vs Tennessee Tech start in weather delay before kickoff

UPDATE: The two teams are entering the field and officials are projecting an 8:40 p.m. kickoff.

The start of the Middle Tennessee State football vs. Tennessee Tech has been under a delay since before the scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff time.

Heavy rain has been steady at Floyd Stadium since around the original kickoff time, but it's lightning in the area, which began around 5:15 p.m., that has been the reason for the delay.

The NCAA recommends a delay of 30 minutes for every lightning strike in the area.

It's the Blue Raider debut for first-year MTSU coach Derek Mason, who is no stranger to to delays. His debut at Vanderbilt (vs. Temple) on Aug. 28, 2014, was delayed more than an hour and a half and didn't finish until 1:14 a.m.

The Blue Raiders and Golden Eagles haven't played since 2006, a 44-0 MTSU win. MTSU leads the all-time series with their former Ohio Valley Conference rivals 36-31-7.
