    Prep Scoreboard: Waynedale girls soccer scores big non-league win over Orrville

    GIRLS SOCCER

    Waynedale 2, Orrville 0

    Waynedale secured a huge non-league win over Orrville, an up-and-coming program, with hopes of establishing itself among the elite in the area this year. In one of the Red Riders key matchups on their slate this year, the Golden Bears made a statement with one strike in each half to post the victory.

    Nayeli Cruz and Piper Polen both scored with Cinthia Reyes and Anna Pittman both dishing one assist. Goalkeeper Mylah Moore finished with seven saves and the shutout.

    Red Riders goalkeeper Paige Baer made six saves.

    Smithville 6, Hillsdale 0

    Maddie Hartzler had a pair of assists, Jenna Necko tossed a clean sheet and Smithville beat WCAL rival Hillsdale. Claire Haas, Kerfina Vasquez, Kaylie Holmes, Kaylin Yockey and Aly Wickens each added one goal apiece.

    BOYS SOCCER

    Hiland 3, Fairbanks 2

    The Hawks hosted a skilled Fairbanks squad and pulled out the narrow win in a game that took three and half hours to complete as Mother Nature played her part.

    In the end though, Christian Mullet, Jackson Mullet and Logan Hershberger each buried a goal while Zeke and Luke Bodiker, both dished out one assist to secure the opening day victory.

    Central Christian 3, Northwestern 0

    Stretching its legs and finding its groove in the second half, Central Christian tagged home three goals to shutout host Northwestern.

    A.J. Munholand, Ben Miller and Silas Coleman each tallied on goal with Miller and Aaron Miedel both adding an assist. The Comets outshot the Huskies 19-6 as Bryan Martin finished with two saves in the shutout.

    Smithville 1, Triway 0

    In a non-league pairing, Triway put Smithville on the ropes in this rivalry, but in the end, Quinn Maibach delivered the win with the goal.

    Smithies goalkeeper Luke Derodes finished with one save for the clean sheet.

    Rootstown 9, Chippewa 0

    Chippewa fell on opening day to Rootstown as goalkeeper Alex Rodriguez finished with 10 saves.

    Tuslaw 8, West Holmes 0

    Holding a 5-0 lead when the weather rolled in, the Mustangs tallied three more goals after the delay to ice the game.

    VOLLEYBALL

    Northwestern 26, 25, 25, 22, 15; Loudonville 28, 23, 16, 25, 5

    It went five, but in the end, Northwestern downed nearby rival Loudonville behind Alexa Riffel, who had 16 points, five aces and 34 assists.

    Ella Hartsel pounded 18 kills and had 12 digs, and Morgan Ervin finished with 26 digs.

    West Holmes 20, 25, 25, 28; Orrville 25, 21, 20, 26

    Allie Snyder had 19 kills, 16 assists and 14 digs, Greta Rollince and Mallory Marmet each had 15 kills and Jasi Weber tallid 16 digs in West Holmes win over Orrville.

    The Red Riders were led by Abby Gonzales and Jacy Mulpas with six kills apiece, Aiiya Tuggle had 14 assists and nine digs, and Maddie Warner-Orr totaled 11 digs.

    Triway 25, 20, 25, 25; Indian Valley 12, 25, 23, 21

    Triway went to Gnadenhutten and road home 1-0 with a victory over host Indian Valley as it rallied from a 1-1 draw early to secure the last two sets.

    Audrey Walton laced up 16 kills and blocked six shots, Mia Mariola added 10 kills, Taylor Mathis dished out 44 assists and Reagan Underwood tallied 27 digs.

    Kent Miller Invitational

    West Holmes finished 21st at the Kent Miller Invitational, hosted by Mt. Vernon.

    Friday, Aug. 16

    GIRLS SOCCER

    Hiland 2, Stow 1

    Opening up the 2024 season, Hiland made the trip to Stow and battled Div. I Stow-Munroe Falls. The Hawks struck first and held on late to secure the win, holding a 7-5 edge in shots.

    Italee Mullet and Kailyn Miller combined for the locals first goal in the 29th minute of the first half, on a Miller to Mullet connection. Eight minutes into the second half, Miller took a pass from Chanelle Kellogg and buried it for a 2-0 advantage and the win.

    Chippewa 9, Manchester 0

    The Chipps looked more than ready for the season to kickoff as Delaney Marshall bagged a hat trick and Cally West knocked home a pair. Elena Moyer, Alaina Henthorn, Emme Donnelly and Myra Lewis each added one apiece.

    GlenOak 7, Wooster 0

    Wooster fell on opening night to non-conference opponent, GlenOak.

    BOYS SOCCER

    Shaker Heights 6, Wooster 0

    Wooster went on the road to play a tough Shaker Heights team and lost a in a tough opening day setback.
