    Smithville 30, Claymont 27

In a back-and-forth battle, the right foot of Quinn Maibach proved to be the difference and that was perfect for Smithville. The Smithies and Claymont battled to a scoreless final quarter until Maibach toed his kick from 27-yards out with 1:23 remaining to break a 27-27 tie.

"We had a lot of resiliencies, we took a lot of blows, and we kept coming back," said Smithville coach Phil Olsen. "I couldn't be prouder of our kids for how they battled the whole night. Credit to Claymont, they kept making big plays and our kids gave us everything they had and that's all you can ask for."

Through the first three quarters, the two teams traded scores as Smithville relied on Mason Haines, who scored three times on runs from 4, 5 and 64 yards. Haines finished with a team-high and the second-most yards in program history with 258. That total also puts him inside the top-15 in area history for a single-game performance.

"Haines is the definition of a warrior," said Olsen. "He was bleeding from his nose, yet he carried it 27 times in this heat and just kept ripping off those big runs. Mason embodies what we want our program to be; tough, hard-nosed and team player."

Jace Leach snared a pick-six in the third quarter from 33 yards out and another key performer was freshman quarterback Brady Sidle. With senior Trei Durstine banged up and out the lineup, Sidle became the first freshman under Olsen's tenure as coach to start for the Smithies. He finished throwing for 30 yards and more importantly kept the offense humming this high-paced offensive night.

"Sidle did a great job of stepping in with Trei banged up," said Olsen. "It's the first time during my coaching time, that I've had a freshman start."

It all setup the final moment when Maibach delivered.

"Quinn has really worked on his craft for us and been pretty consistent," added Olsen. "Even if he is nervous, he doesn't look nervous, and it has a calming effect on others out there. Tonight, he just powered it through, and it was huge."

    Tuslaw 21, Chippewa 0

Broc Dial notched his first win as coach for Tuslaw as the Mustangs galloped to a 21-point second quarter and a win over Chippewa.

"First off, I thought the Chipp's played hard and did a lot of good things tonight," said Dial. "Our team did a better job this week playing more disciplined. We will enjoy the win tonight and look to get better tomorrow morning."

Ethan Haer broke the scoreless game with a 1-yard touchdown dive about five minutes into the second period. Nathan Eberhardt crashed home with 4:38 left from 10 yards out and then Haer iced it with a scoring scamper from seven yards out. For Haer, it capped a night that saw him through for 109 on 7-of-17 throwing. Eberhardt amassed 219 all-purpose yards as he ran for 159 and paced the Mustangs with 60 yards receiving.

    Northwestern 28, Black River 21

Isaac Beun ran for a score and three for three more to lead Northwestern past Black River in this non-league battle. Beun totaled 310 total yards, 98 on the ground and 212 through the air as he and the Huskies evened their record to 1-1.

On the night, Beun finished 16-of-26 throwing and his favorite targets were Mason Myers and Riley Ramsier with six catches apiece. Myers finished with 132 yards and two scores and Ramsier had 61 yards and touchdown.

Leading Northwestern defensively was Ashton Good with 14 tackles and Jake Haley, who had 11.

    Triway 28, Carrollton 7

Triway kept the good vibes going by notching its second win on the season by dismantling Carrollton.

The Titans were led by quarterback Luke Starr, who was 18-of-29 passing for 326 yards and tossed three scores. He added eight yards on the ground and another score as Wyatt Posten paced the locals with 46 yards on the ground.

Starr's top targets were Olley Krupp, who hauled in four passes for 86 yards and a 44-yard score, that put Triway on the board first. Bruin Flinner had three catches for 86 yards and a score, and Alex Shearer finished with five snares for 84 yards. Brody Flinner hauled in Starr's other score.

    Hillsdale 26, Lucas 8

Scoring in each quarter, Hillsdale put this game with Lucas away early as it moved to 2-0 on the season.

Kael Lewis found Holland Young from 29 yards out to put the Falcons on the board first with 3:27 left in the first quarter. Lewis then came back and found Hayden McFadden on a 50-yard scoring throw and then came back to McFadden in the fourth quarter for a touchdown. Lewis finished 11-of-16 throwing for 233 yards with McFadden leading all Falcon receivers with 10 catches for 107 yards. On the ground, Owen Sloan finished with 127 yards on the ground to lead Hillsdale which included an 80 scoring run.
