The Greenville Noon Rotary has announced the winners of its three Rotary Scholarships for 2024.

The scholarships are open to Pitt County high school seniors and are worth $1,500 each. The award is based on an assessment of the applicant’s financial need, academic achievement, leadership/service in the community, letter or recommendation and a 3-5 minute video about how the Rotary motto, “Service About Self,” applies to their lives now or in the future.

This year Rotary had 12 completed applications from six high schools.

Winners of the scholarships are Amira Hijazi, a student in the Innovative Early College program at ECU who will attend Duke University; Lydia Hilliard, a D.H. Conley student who will attend East Carolina University; and Taylor Ann Cherry a student at J.H. Rose High School, who will attend East Carolina University.

Rotary International is an international service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.

Benefits include effecting change in the community, advancing business and professional contacts, developing leadership skills, and gaining an understanding of and impacting international humanitarian issues.

Among its local service projects are these scholarships, river clean-up, providing food and school supplies, blood drives, and grant funding for several local non-profit organizations, raised through the annual Field of Flags in the fall and a golf tournament in the spring.

The Greenville Noon Rotary meets most Mondays at noon except for holidays in the Rotary Building, 809 Johnston St. in Greenville. Visitors are always welcome.
