A man who has been convicted of impaired driving-related charges 13 times was arrested again after a crash on his own property the day before, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Aug. 21 deputies were dispatched to Brookview Place in Greenville to assist emergency medical personnel, the sheriff’s office said. They found a man, identified as Todd Anthony Baker, 60, of 2144 Brookview Place, Greenville, had driven into a fence. The residence is in southeastern Pitt County off of Rouse Road and Crestway Place, south of Portertown Road.

The sheriff’s office said multiple residents had complained of Baker with reports of reckless driving and other possible criminal activity. An investigation was launched with assistance from the Greenville Police Department. It determined that Baker had driven through Greenville city limits into the county and caused numerous near collisions.

A magistrate issued an arrest warrant charging Baker with felony habitual driving while impaired and driving while license revoked. He was arrested Aug. 22 at his residence where the truck used in the incident was seized. Baker also was found in possession of multiple firearms, which is illegal due to his convicted felon status. He was further charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Baker was initially jailed at the Pitt County Detention Center under a $450,000 secured bond. Following a first appearance in Pitt County District Court, Judge Wendy Hazelton increased the bond to $1.2 million and instituted several pre-trial release conditions for Baker, the sheriff’s office said. He remains in custody.

Baker’s impaired driving convictions date back to March 20, 1988, in Lenoir County with 10 other convictions across the state ranging from April 16, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2020. He has twice been convicted of habitual driving while impaired, once on Sept. 6, 2013, and again on June 4, 2018. He served a 13-month prison sentence in 2013 and a 15-month sentence in 2018.
