Greene Central girls’ tennis is right where it normally is in mid-September, and that place is first place.

True to usual form, the Rams are leaving the other Eastern Plains Conference teams in the dust with 10-0 league record and 16-1 mark overall.

Other locals behind Greene Central in the standings include Ayden-Grifton at 3-2 in the EPC, North Pitt at 3-4 and Farmville Central at 2-5. The only real challenger to GC’s perennial dominance is Washington at 6-1.

The Rams, in fact, started the campaign with 16 consecutive match wins before last week’s 7-2 setback to Fike on the road in Wilson.

In that match, senior No. 1 singles player Anna Katherine Medlin was in her usual form with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Fike No. 1 Holland Ellis. Junior mainstay Grace Baggett also won at No. 3 over Zoe Mitchell, 6-3, 6-1.

Last season, Medlin won 46 matches and charged all the way to the 2A state title match as an individual.

Also back in the fold this year for Rams are senior Rylee Greene at No. 2, junior Aubree Smith at No. 5 and senior Coley Dyer at No, 6. Added into the mix and playing at No. 4 is freshman Charlotte Medlin.

GC’s early-season wins have included some tough state-level competition including Hoggard, Corinth Holders, Franklin Academy, Wake Forest and Wakefield.

Wet weather affected many of this week’s scheduled matches.

    Ayden-Grifton

The Chargers are 4-5 overall and entered this week on the heels of a 9-0 EPC victory over West Craven.

A-G boasts plenty of experience with five seniors in its singles arsenal, including No. 1 Kaitlyn Wood, No. 2 Addison Hardee, No. 3 Meredith Davies, No. 5 Makayla Horton and No. 6 Logan Riggs. At No. 4 is experienced junior Riley Tittle.

All of them recorded shutout victories against the Eagles.

    North Pitt

The Panthers are in a funk following a promising start to the season.

NP’s current losing streak includes a tough 5-4 setback at home on Tuesday against Bertie.

The Panthers have just two seniors in their singles stable, including No. 1 Nidia Morales and No. 4 Yamileth Montoya. Youth is the future of the team with sophomores Kiari Drazen at No. 2, Moriah Ruffin at No. 3 and Grace LaMonica at 5 and freshman Estefani Garcia at 6.

    Farmville Central

The Jaguars suffered a pair of losses last week and were slated to play ay Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

FC is in a bit of a rebuild this season with a mix of youth and experience. The Jags are led at the top by junior Aidyn McLawhorn, with senior Addison Dew at No. 2 and a pair of sophomores in Ashley Vazquez and Brianna Sanchez at Nos. 3 and 4.

Also in the mix are juniors Abigail Price and Melissa Trejo Labra.
