Tastefood: A grainy side dish without the grains
Invite this side dish to your next barbecue. Your vegetarian friends will thank you (and so will anyone else looking for a delicious way to enjoy their vegetables). The star of this recipe is cauliflower. The humble crucifer steps in as a healthy, gluten-free substitute for wheat in a lemony and very chopped salad. When finely chopped, cauliflower is a great replacement for grains and pasta, with the bonus of adding refreshing sweet and nutty flavor and a host of nutrients. The sturdy texture resembles couscous grains, resulting in a light, veggie-forward salad or side dish. ...
July 17 abby: Co-worker weighs wisdom of being a 'side piece'
DEAR ABBY: I met this guy at work. He was everything I'm looking for in a guy. During a lunch walk, he told me about his breakup with his ex and how he moved out and bought a house. He lives with his son and his nephews and their family. The entire two months we dated were amazing. There may have been a couple of red flags my co-worker and friends noticed. He couldn't message me often after work or on weekends, and he was always so busy with his kid we couldn't go on a date. He told me...
Ask the Doctors: More drownings highlight need for water safety
Q: Our 3-year-old daughter almost drowned when she fell into a neighbor's pool last summer. She's going to be OK, but she is still facing some medical problems. This has made us aware that water safety is actually a health issue. We hope you might address this in an upcoming column. A: As parents ourselves, we appreciate your bringing up an important topic. Unfortunately, accidental drownings are a grim fact of summer life. Data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that...
Letter: Suggested campaign slogans
The following might help to balance the gist of the majority of the letters you publish. If you love surging crime and criminals marauding the streets with impunity, vote Democrat! If you love illegal invaders consuming the entire wealth and social resources of the country, vote Democrat! If you love children being indoctrinated to hate...
Alexander H. Jones: Harris-Cooper could be winning ticket for Dems
I have admired Joe Biden for the entire time I have followed politics. I supported his primary candidacy in 2020, cast an emphatic vote for him that fall, and stood squarely behind much of his agenda as he expanded clean energy, made health care more affordable and revitalized manufacturing across the heartland of this country. But Biden’s prior success was not a guarantee that his political career could withstand the costs of his aging body and mind. The CNN debate with Trump did immense damage to Biden’s candidacy. At this point, I do not think that Joe Biden is the...
John Hood: Trump shooting should shock the conscience
Enough. The attempted assassination of Donald Trump, a despicable and indefensible act that came within a whisker of success, should shock the conscience of a seething nation. It should prompt sober reflection, deep introspection, and prayer. The right people are saying the right things. “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America,” said President Joe Biden, urging us to “unite as one nation to condemn it.” U.S. Sen....
Froma Harrop: Economy is superior with Biden
In overseeing the American economy, President Joe Biden has shown himself to be an amazing manager. It’s all there in the numbers, especially when placed next to those of his predecessor. And should Biden win a second term and show himself to be not as sharp as he was four years ago, small matter economy-wise. He has a high-caliber administration to keep the good times rolling. Where do we start? Let’s start with Donald Trump’s favorite economic yardstick, stock market performance. The S&P 500 had...
Durable skills will be incorporated into classroom teaching
Teaching students durable skills such as showing up for work on time in addition to academic knowledge and stressing the importance of each is the focus of a new report presented last week to North Carolina’s State Board of Education. Those skills inclusive of having a good work ethic and motivation are important to employers in every career field and contribute to much higher pay for employees, the report said. ...
Republicans lean into Trump's border message during a convention night focused on immigration
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Immigration took center stage as the Republican National Convention resumed Tuesday, with speakers spotlighting a key element of former President Donald Trump ’s political brand that helped endear him to the GOP base when he began his first campaign in 2015. Among speakers slated for Tuesday night were families who've been impacted by violent crime — part of a GOP strategy to link crime to border policies. They include the family of Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman whom prosecutors say was killed...
Letter: Housing booms for whom?
For quite some time now, Greenville has been building new homes at an astounding rate. As I traverse the city and it’s outlying suburbs, it seems a brand-new development is underway quite often. Single-family home subdivisions, apartment complexes, duplexes and townhomes are all part of the mix. So, who takes up all this readily available living space? Where are all these “new residents” coming from? If the Greenville-Pitt County area...
Editorial: Disinformation risky business for US military
As disinformation and misinformation become major tools of global conflict, democracies need to decide when and how they should influence populations abroad. Influence campaigns are undoubtedly necessary, but how to conduct them according to democratic values is less obvious. The Pentagon has offered a good lesson in what not to do. A clandestine disinformation campaign against Chinese coronavirus vaccines in 2020 and 2021, a program just revealed in an investigation by Reuters, was a grave error. ...

Biden tries to sharpen choice voters face in November as Republicans meet in Milwaukee
LAS VEGAS (AP) — President Joe Biden returns to the campaign trail Tuesday for the first time since the attempted assassination of his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, aiming to sharpen the choice voters will face this November in the wake of the attack. Biden will speak at the NAACP convention in Las Vegas, aiming to showcase his administration's support for Black voters who are a tentpole of the Democratic coalition and of his personal political support. He'll also participate in an interview with...
Star Parker: Court delivers correct decision on homelessness
Homelessness, unfortunately, has become a persistent and growing problem in the United States. The Supreme Court, in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, just dealt with one big issue associated with this problem — the ability of cities to prohibit camping on public property. Per the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, the answer has been that the municipality can prohibit such activity. Violators are subject to fines and jail time. ...
July 16 abby: Freeloading dad wants to add wife
DEAR ABBY: My father has depended on my mother (and me) for money for as long as I can remember. It wasn't because he was unable to work, but because he was lazy and had a drinking and gambling problem. My parents eventually divorced, and my father moved in with his sister (my aunt). She died in 2016, which would have made my father homeless, so my sister and I bought our aunt's home from our cousins so he could stay there. Fast-forward: Our father...
Cheering GOP delegates nominate Trump for president as he announces Vance as running mate
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jubilant and emboldened after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, Republicans on Monday nominated the former president to lead their ticket for a third time and welcomed Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate. “We must unite as a party, and we must unite as a nation,” said Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley, Trump’s handpicked party leader, as he opened Monday's primetime national convention session. “We must show the same strength and resilience as President Trump and lead this nation to...

The Daily Reflector has been a vital part of the life of Greenville, Pitt County, and eastern North Carolina for more than a century. The company was founded in 1882 by David Jordan Whichard and Julian R. Whichard, who bought the printing equipment from the proprietor of The Express, for whom they once worked. Moving the equipment into their mother's one-room schoolhouse, the brothers began their own weekly newspaper, The Eastern Reflector. In 1885, David Jordan Whichard became sole owner and publisher of The Reflector, beginning daily publication December 10, 1884.
