COLDWATER - For years some of the absolute best 12U baseball players from Branch County would descend on the local fairgrounds to compete in the annual Branch County Fair Baseball tournament.

Over the past several seasons the event organizers have shaken things up a bit in an effort to make the tournament bigger, better, and more inclusive than ever, adding different age groups and the sport of softball to the week long festivities.

On Monday, the weeklong tournament kicked off with the 10U division as teams in both softball and baseball took to the diamond looking to garner a win in front of the ever-present Ferris wheel.

Jonesville holds Bronson offense in check, takes 10U baseball win

The Jonesville Comet 10U baseball team played some stellar defense on Monday night, holding the Bronson VIkings to just two runs in the nightcap of the opening night of baseball, as it was the Comets going on to take the 9-2 win.

Bronson kept things close early as the game was tied 1-1 after two innings of play thanks to a run scored by Graysen Miller who found his way home after a walk to lead off the second inning.

Jonesville’s defense buckled down after the second inning and kept Bronson from scoring much of the game, while the offense sprinkled in eight runs, including two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth to push the 1-1 tie into a 9-2 advantage.

Bronson made some noise in the final inning of the game as a walk by Diesel Wonders eventually brought the Viking around to score, closing the lead to 9-2, which is where the game would end.

Bronson and Jonesville will meet again in 10U baseball action as the two teams will face off Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Jonesville will have the opportunity to wrap up the 10U baseball championship for the Branch County Fair with a win. A win for Bronson would extend the tournament however as the two teams would meet Thursday night for a winner-take-all championship, beginning at 7 p.m.
